Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It manages to meld these two stories pretty rationally, believe it or not, but to be frank I didn't need that serial killer movie. All its serves to do is interrupt a really great drama. Nov 30, 2022 Full Review Steven Nguyen Scaife Slant Magazine The film ties itself into many knots as it chases the superficial sugar high of a big reveal. Oct 31, 2022 Full Review Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle There are powerful ideas, performances, and images present in Missing, but the film can never quite keep these elements synchronized long enough to pack a memorable punch. Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan (Medium) Missing is worth a watch. It explores the complexity of Japanese society and how socioeconomics adds a layer to social commentary. Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Video Librarian Magazine Director and co-writer Shinzô Katayama served as Bong Joon-ho’s assistant on 2009's Mother, and his second feature has the feel of a slow-burn Bong thriller combined with the deadpan weirdness of a Kiyoshi Kurosawa murder mystery. Rated: 3/4 Apr 18, 2023 Full Review Pieter-Jan Van Haecke Psychocinematography With Missing, Shinzo Katayama delivers one of the most satisfying drama-thrillers this year. JJJJJJ J The main character is very annoying in my mind and kind of ruins the whole movie. The whole child adult that is both incredible childish but at the same time is suppose to be viewed as more credit and smart then the adults is just bad. The plot was also a little bit overly produced and easily could have been simplified. There was some positive takeaways but not enough. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Fulop S Great violence for nothing. Gives ideas for the brainless generation that runs our world today. I do not recommend. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/27/23 Full Review Gabriel S This movie is very dumb they make the characters dumb there is multiple times they could have left and get to the police Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/23 Full Review Doug G The sub genre of found footage via computer screen is exemplified by the 2018 film, Searching. Missing is a just-above-average take on the idea. The positives of the film help elevate an over-complicated script. These strong positives are the direction and acting. It is inventive, albeit formulaic, how the story transitions all told through the pov of a computer screen. Storm Reid does a very good job of carrying the film, providing a nice energy that equals the frantic editing and direction as the movie gets deeper into the story. A standout is Joaquim de Almeida who plays a character who will do what he can to help for only $8 an hour. Missing overstays it's welcome a bit when the story starts to get too convoluted. The more the film "gets smart" with the screenplay, it makes you ask more questions about the reality of the story. There's also a trope of a character being smart most of the time, but being dumb at key moments. Overall, a lesser director and cast would make this a movie to skip, but it was still mostly a fun movie despite the drawbacks that develop throughout the runtime.
