Critics Consensus

The sea calls to no one in this underwhelming new version of Moana, a rather lifeless endeavor that solidifies its animated predecessor as the superior adventure.

Johnson’s carapace is detailed with skin-like textures, swollen bicep veins and living tattoos that offer him encouragement and advice. The uncanny valley is right between his pecs. I got distracted trying to find his nipples. Go to Full Review

While the animated feature sought to enchant audiences with its rendering of Polynesian mythology with breathtaking creativity, the live-action version almost flattens out those imaginative renderings. Go to Full Review

The beautifully animated Moana sparkled yet this version doesn’t, despite closely following the original script. Go to Full Review

Follows the earlier film slavishly but is inferior to it in virtually every respect. Still, it’s better than the worst of these Disney remakes, though far from the best. Go to Full Review

Entertaining enough, but one glaring point of live action vs. animation is that when there are dead spots in the story it's deader live. Lead actor Catherine Laga’aia is radiant as the courageous Moana in redundant territory. Go to Full Review

It's colorful, it's vibrant, the songs are still terrific and Dwayne Johnson is a hoot as the fabulously coiffured demigod. Is it in any way necessary? Of course not. Go to Full Review
