      Critics Consensus

Despite an abundance of style and some big names, Mobsters can't escape its empty plotting, numbing violence, and Gangster Movie 101 concepts.

Audience Member Pretty sure it stole some scenes directly from The Godfather. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review kevin c This is kind of like the "Young Guns" of mafia movies as Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey lead this film as Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, two young men growing up in a mobbed up NYC and making their way up the ladder playing both sides of the warring top bosses. I like this movie mostly because I love gangster movies and this one has some instances of ultra violence and a pretty great cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A pretty good gangster film that is no "Goodfellas", but with the help of the brilliant cast and nicely developed story, "Mobsters" managed to be entertaining. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Almost cringe worthy. Remake this with an actual budget and it will be amazing. The writing is terrible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The plot is iffy, but for what the movie is, I think it does the job. Christian Slater does great as Lucky Luciano. People rate this way too harshly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow, the critics really hated this movie - and I don't get it. It's definitely not Goodfellas, but it's a serviceable, if not enjoyable flick. If you're looking for something different to watch, and you like 1920's gangster movies , then I think this would be an enjoyable selection. Jo Berry Empire Magazine Although things like character development are sometimes lost in the crossfire, the lead actors have enough charm to sustain the film. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2014 Full Review Michael Sragow New Yorker It's an excuse for the latest crop of media-spawned personalities -- the male equivalent of starlets -- to invade the heavy-duty genre of the gangster film. They don't come up to Cagney's spats. May 20, 2014 Full Review Peter Rainer Los Angeles Times Mobsters looks like it was made by people who have seen too many gangster films for people who haven't seen any. There isn't a breath of life in the filmmaking. May 21, 2013 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) A kiddie gangster movie that appears to have been cast by the Ford Modeling Agency, dressed by the editors of GQ, and written by the marketing department of some cheesy brokerage house currently under investigation. Rated: 1.5/4 May 9, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Mobsters is of overwhelming violence, but also of insinuated elegance. [Full review in Spanish] Jan 25, 2023 Full Review Ralph Novak People Magazine To say that production designer Richard Sylbert, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick and cinematographer Lajos Koltai give the settings a handsome, authentic look is like saying that the Titanic had nice chandeliers.
