Ben Sachs Chicago Reader With this innovative working method, Rouch raises a question implicit in all nonfiction filmmaking: Who’s the genuine auteur, the director or the subjects? And yet the results don’t feel at all cerebral. Sep 13, 2022 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker These nonactors, playing versions of themselves, perform and discuss their own stories in voice-over. Tellingly, they draw crucial aspects of their self-image not from African culture but from American and French media. Apr 14, 2020 Full Review Jean-Luc Godard Arts (France) Moi, un Noir is, in effect, both the most daring of films and the humblest. Sep 2, 2021 Full Review Nathanael Hood The Young Folks ...a stunning portrait not just of disaffected youth, but of a country struggling to define and improve itself in the shadow of Western imperialism. Audience Member Herzog like psuedo-cinema verite where the staged, improvised, and written freely flow into one another, but with a more Ethographic bent, becasue Ethnography is Rouch's background and main cinematic theme. Interconnecting stories are ocassionally difficult to sort out ocassionally, the voice over narration of the three different characters and te narrator are sporadically inspired but sometimes dull. The shots of beer halls and bars are impressive and the portion of the film that stands out most in my mind. An interesting look at the African coast in the late 50's, that could have used more narrative cohesion between it's real and dramatic events. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant film from anthropologist Jean Rouch, with some breathtaking footage. We'll be showing segments of his films at Cut Hands this Friday - for anyone interested. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Le vrai point de depart de la modernite en France.
