Amy C This is a biopic I was looking forward to, as Charles Aznavour was one of the greatest French singer-songwriters and one of the few who achieved fame outside France. However, the film has a major flaw: Tahar Rahim’s portrayal of Aznavour does not do justice to the singer. Rahim is much too tall to play Aznavour (Rahim is 5'9" while Aznavour was 5'3") and his gestures, especially during the musical performances, are exaggerated to the point of becoming extremely annoying. Additionally, the makeup and hairstyle work is poorly executed, drawing attention to itself rather than blending into the actor. Another significant issue is the lip-syncing: the actor doesn’t actually sing, and the lip-syncing is so poorly done that I almost walked out of the cinema. I had to push myself to stay. It is nearly impossible to connect with the character as Rahim fails to convey any emotion. The singer is depicted as a heartless workaholic, fixated on money, fame, and prolonging his career for as long as possible. Rahim's portrayal shows a cold, disconnected Aznavour. Even when his son tragically dies at age 25, Rahim’s portrayal remains distant and disconnected, lacking the depth and emotional complexity that I would imagine Aznavour had in real life. While the film portrays the singer's public and professional life, it fails to balance this with a deeper exploration of his private and emotional life. What we are left with is a surface-level portrayal, a visual display of a Wikipedia page. It would be interesting to know if the family actually agreed to this project. I truly doubt it... To conclude, Rahim’s failed performance makes it nearly impossible to enjoy this movie. “Monsieur Aznavour” feels very shallow. My recommendation: Skip it.
