Audience Member Ok I grew up watching this movie and I just recently watched it and it’s really dated. It’s also a very slow movie. The make-up isn’t as good as I remembered. I’d so be down for a remake of this movie! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Samuel S Monster designs are great. Plot is fine. Some really nice 80's aesthetic, though not much of it was retained in my brain after the film. Fun monster fluff, a little edgy for today though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Koen H Pretty awesome still ! :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review matthias s Buckle up, monster mavens and spooky aficionados! The Monster Squad, a charmingly frightful blast from the past, has clawed its way through the sands of time to deliver monstrous merriment and ghoulish guffaws. This cult classic has aged like a fine vintage vampire, proving that monsters, no matter how hairy or fang-tastic, can stand the test of time. In the realm of horror comedy, The Monster Squad reigns supreme, capturing the essence of spine-tingling humor and memorable monster moments. It's a frightful flick that deserves a spot in any movie enthusiast's collection, promising monstrous laughs and an enduring legacy that's a cut above the rest. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review DanTheMan 2 Where Night of the Creeps was Fred Dekker's celebration of 50s science fiction B-movies mixed with 80s splatter fests, The Monster Squad takes that appreciation but applies it to the Universal monsters of old, sharper than a stake in its genre references and is so much fun it makes you wish you were a kid again. Dekker knows his stuff, making the movie all about mood and atmosphere, complemented by Bruce Broughton's sumptuous score, it balances that classic terror with occasional stomach-churning violence, thanks largely in part to its sharp, witty and childishly crass script, it has everything you could want from a light-hearted 80s horror flick. A real gleeful monster mash boasting a scrappy, ramshackle charm thanks to Tom Woodruff Jr.'s effects team with some superb monster make-up and costume design. The very enjoyable performances from its cast of characters and monsters really help sell the film's endless charm with Duncan Regehr's turn as Count Dracula being especially terrifying. With the right attitude, tone and respect for the characters, The Monster Squad remains just as exciting today as it did back in 1987, more than standing the test of time. It also finally answers the age-old question of whether or not The Wolfman's got nards. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/25/23 Full Review Nol P I forgot how fun a movie this was/is and it was my first time seeing Monster Squad in like a gazillion yrs! Since it first hit theatres in like 1987, this is only my 2nd time ever seeing this and I thoroughly enjoyed. Is a top five of all kids movies now based on the fun aspect and right up there with Goonies, Stand By Me, and the Sandlot!
