Christy Lemire ChristyLemire.com It is essentially Revenge of the Nerds, with fur. And scales. And whatever gooey, gelatinous substance comprises the outer coating of various other oddball creatures in this crazy parallel world. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 8, 2013 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland Studios don't often seem to be thinking about the ideal moviegoer, just about the maximum number of moviegoers ... Pixar is no different in that regard, but even in this relatively fallow period ... it's never stopped thinking the most of us. Rated: A- Jul 26, 2013 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard So many movies, these days, are about nerds and their market value. Dan Scanlon's prequel is the newest, but already feels old. Rated: 3/5 Jul 12, 2013 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) A criminally underrated prequel that was better than it had any right to be, Monsters University is far more than a stellar college comedy with monsters learning how to scare humans. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Although not wholly original or as monumental as some of Pixar’s other work, it’s a film that embraces the studio’s drive for timeless, universally appealing animation. Obi-wan K Great prequel cant complain Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Boxy B It's Not Good, but it's not bad Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Jay W "Monsters University" is Pixar's animated prequel to "Monsters Inc" released 12 years after the fact. Admittedly, setting the movie as a prequel, is its biggest problem to overcome. With the way "Monsters Inc" ended, there was potential for an interesting sequel. There isn't much you can do with the prequel, following the story of how Mike and Sully met in college. It follows all the typical college movie clichés, but with it having a "G" rating, this will likely be the first exposure most kids get to those story beats. For me, most of this movie is salvaged by the ending. I won't give it away here, but let's just say it is a clever twist on the formula. I respect the fact that movie does not speak down to its audience. Despite its "Kids' Movie" visual, it is tackling issues that goes well above their target demographic. And I don't mean that throw out references or innuendos, they are just tackling issues that the kids won't relate to. They're characters going to college and wanting to get a job. Kids can relate in the broad strokes, but it is the adults that truly have empathy with the protagonists. The movie may not get an "A+", but it does receive a passing grade. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Abby A I absolutely adore this movie. It gets SO MUCH BACKLASH from Monsters Inc. fans but I have absolutely no clue why. I love it so much, but I am a bit biased, having watched this movie BEFORE Monsters Inc. Some of the most prominent critical reviews are about things not quite lining up and I guess I can see that. In Monsters Inc. they mentioned Mike and Sully being friends in elementary school, whereas in MU they met as freshmen in college. There are a few things that I realized about this movie after watching Monsters Inc. (such as Randall's *ahem* Randy's "Winds of Change" poster in his and Mike's dorm and actually that Randall was the VILLAIN of MI, but still) that kind of made me enjoy both movies more. (I don't find it too crazy to watch the prequel before the first movie, so yeah.) I also absolutely loved Mike and Sully's relationship in college, it was so sweet and I just adore the enemies-to-besties dynamic they had going on. I love the guys in Oozma Kappa, they are so wholesome and dorky, which almost reminds me of myself lol. More backlash that this movie got is Randall's role in the movie doesn't make any sense. I don't think anything that happened in his character arc could lead to anything less than who he is in MI, even if Sully humiliated him, this does NOT mean he couldn't graduate and become a top-scarer, he was so sweet and precious before he tried being somebody he wasn't, which I feel is so true. His disdain for Sully makes complete sense (regardless of what anyone else says) and I think that because he was talented and now fueled by an ambitious desire to get to the top would end up ready to do whatever it takes to be the best, as we see in MI, his development makes complete sense to me, and it somehow makes him one of my favorite Pixar characters, even if he's kinda awful in his adulthood. Mike and Sully climbing the corporate ladder after being expelled from college are so touching and I love it, it showcases that nothing you do can change God's plan for your life, even if this movie isn't inherently Christian, I love the way it shows Mike and Sully still fulfilling their dreams, even if not in the way they expected. I quote this movie on the daily and It will always be one of my favorite Pixar movies, no matter what anyone else says. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Leovanni E Its A Good Flashback Film But I'm Still Upset Monsters, Inc. Didn't Get A Real Sequel. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Michele M Monsters University is a great prequel even if it isn't as good as "Monsters Inc." . The best character in movie is Mike because with his charisma he got better the self-esteem of a team of people that were considered as "losers" Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
