Like many 20-somethings her age, Sophie (Lana Condor) is faced with a world of choices. Sure, there's the future stuff, the family stuff, the job stuff. But, where she is truly confused is on the big choice, the momentous one, the top-of-list one that stands out--what to do about him! Her long-term b.f. Calvin (Mason Gooding) has moved with his family and taken a job out of town. As in way out of town. A published scientist, Calvin's posting was supposed to be temporary and now, that "temporary" is beginning to read more like "permanent." Then there's Walt (Cole Sprouse), who's also confronted with choices, but mmmmmaybe not so many. He's pretty content with his going nowhere assistant barista job in a college bookshop and his solitary existence. That is, until he meets Ginny (Emily Rudd), and the closing-time-to-sunrise hours he spends with her convinces him that she's the one. The time just flies. But sadly, at dawn, so does Ginny, off to where her new life is waiting. A romantic comedy with a twist, "Moonshot" follows Walt and Sophie as they join forces in order to be reunited with their significant others, embarking upon a lively journey that winds up taking them both wildly and unexpectedly off course.

Critics Consensus

It's surprisingly ordinary for a romcom set in space, but Lana Condor's performance helps Moonshot hit the target more often than not.

Jordan Hoffman TV Guide It's a trip worth taking. Apr 21, 2022 Full Review Leslie Felperin Guardian This is a smarter-than-it-sounds sci-fi romcom, the kind Gen-Z kids would presumably dig. Rated: 3/5 Apr 19, 2022 Full Review Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle A pretty bland, pretty by-the-numbers rom-com. And a rom-com set in space simply shouldn’t feel this terrestrial. Apr 14, 2022 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Despite some narrative ambition and an engaging young cast, this science-fiction romantic comedy becomes lost in the cosmos. Jan 7, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast Despite not having a ton of chemistry, Sprouse and Condor are hugely likeable in this funny and wry space rom-com. From the gorgeous interiors to amusing robot banter, Moonshot is surprisingly much better than its silly premise suggests Rated: 3/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Therese Lacson Collider At the end of the day, Moonshot is a failure to launch once you get beyond the shiny packaging of futuristic neon. Calvin O This movie was worth for kids to watch, not adults, I didn't really get to enjoy it that much. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review purrfectly w A fun watch on a Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed the laughs and the style of comedy, like with the robots (ie Gary) in a futuristic world. The story was well written enough and the overall concepts with Mars and Earth were believable, and the space ship journey had some beautiful scenes. The 2 main actors made a great combo and the stark contrast between their personalities was both entertaining and endearing. There were some great moments between these two that I thoroughly enjoyed - like the nervous dancing. It's not all gold of course, but there is some simple, yet great ideas and comedy through out that kept me invested and entertained. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Cannon G Movie was fine. Not very complex, very predictable - a time passer that was alright. A couple of supporting characters were either written poorly or casted poorly, most likely a combination of the two. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/23 Full Review BallisticzsGaming Moonshot is a sci-fi rom-com with an interesting concept which does somewhat work but does fall flat for the most part. I think the thing that really carried this movie to be enjoyable were the characters played by Cole Sprouse and Lana Condor. Cole's character of Walt is charming, idiotic, and is just average while Lana's Sophie is this smart, intelligent person. I thought these two actors and their chemistry was the best part but the concept of a guy wanting nothing more but to go to space to reunite with the girl of his dreams is like any teen rom com but with a sci-fi twist. It's a story we've hear many times but with space, rocket ships, and mars. Within the movie, they even throw in social media references that just seem a bit cheesy and do not work. With all that's said, even though this story is one that's been told many times. It still finds ways to work where others seem to fail which I will applaud. This just seems like another movie that sounded good on paper but wasn't thought about during the execution. Overall, Moonshot is a mediocre love story with great chemistry and an interesting concept that works but the overall story is one that is reused once again. Moonshot gets a C+. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/22 Full Review Big S Kiddyflick It's not for grown ups Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/22 Full Review Audience Member Sprouse and Condor are wondefully paired together, in a cute space romcom that surely hits the beats it needs to, but the fact in takes place in space makes it just a little more interesting and fun. Moonshot could be the sleeper of the year ! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
