      Critics Consensus

A cheesy walk on the dark side, Moonwalkers has no shortage of originality, but it's finally spread too thin.

Dennis B When I've had a bad day, this is my go-to streaming movie of choice. Ron Perlman is just freakin awesome as Kidman. It does start a little slow. But once they go looking for the case full of money, it picks up fast and gets hilarious! When I start this movie at 45:00, I'm laughing hysterically in less than a minute! "Whoa. Nice shirt, dude." I'll bet he never thought those would be his last words…Haha Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Rupert Grint has, compared to his Harry Potter compatriots Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, appeared in more obscure, less mainstream films over the last decade or so. It's an admirable decisions, since it makes him far more likely to star in the odd hidden gem, and less likely to appear on whatever big Hollywood project happens to be getting all the attention. I'm not saying Moonwalkers is some new diamond in the rough or anything, but its still an interesting, if odd and inconsistent watch. If there's any type of character he plays well, it's one who's badly out of his element, in this case a small-time band manager who gets caught up in staging a fake moon landing. A lot of surprise is eliminated by the knowledge that the Apollo 11 mission was successful, so the question of whether the fake footage will be needed is answered from the onset, but the film does still do some interesting things with its premise. I like the pretentious art house director who has ideas way beyond what's expected of him, and I liked how Ron Perlman's hardman act was in complete contrast to pretty much everyone else. The film does go the conventional route a bit too often, with shootouts and cliched gangsters popping up whenever the film needs an action sequence. But I found it to be mostly enjoyable, frequently funny and more interesting than I think many have given it credit for. It's not a fantastic comedy, but if you're just in the mood for a few simple yet surprisingly big laughs, Moonwalkers is a pretty good choice. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member great watch, funny and exciting, some interesting visuals here and there. i cant figure out why this got such poor ratings though - perhaps it was marketed as something less psychedelic or comedic? frankly, i think ron perlman is a much better actor than people give him credit for. being typecast as a thug and having that intimidating face doesn't always land him roles he can be creative with, so this was refreshing. i will say that their depictions of ptsd and of hallucinations are not at all accurate, but the special effects used for them were very solid. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review jelisije j A movie where a guy who is in way over his head who trying to film the moon landing. It does not get better for him, but its downright entertaining for us. A good time to laugh and love this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Gianmarco R In my opinion this film is all in all beautiful because it paints a wonderful England and because all the characters are characterized very well. In terms of comedy the film is very funny and entertains very well but there are some small holes and inconsistencies that are hard not to notice and that lower the level of the film a bit Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/21 Full Review Audience Member The strong performances by Perlman and Grint make this an enjoyable, trippy and gory ride. Ashley Moreno Austin Chronicle Along with a lot of laughs, Moonwalkers offers a lovingly critical take on pop culture, touching on themes of patriotism and film industry pomp, without getting cynical. Dec 12, 2016 Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader It's all good English fun, full of drugs, brutality, and general late-'60s decadence. It's also weirdly slack for such an insane ride, as if director Antoine Bardou-Jacquet was afraid he might get in the way of Dean Craig's splendid story. Rated: 2/5 Jan 15, 2016 Full Review Susan Wloszczyna RogerEbert.com Forget a fake moon landing. "Moonwalkers" is a fake comedy ... Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 15, 2016 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …unfortunately the cultural commentary that should be the text (of Moonwalkers) is made sub-text to some lame 90’s era gangster comedy…’ Rated: 2/5 Apr 22, 2023 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Laugh-out-loud-tears-rolling-down-cheeks-rolling-in-the-aisle-funny!!
