John DeFore Hollywood Reporter At some point, these ingredients were supposed to be food; now, you'll be brave to make it to the end of the meal. Aug 1, 2019 Full Review Bill Arceneaux The Zero Effect Edited with the ferocity of a madman, MOOP lives as open, humble, and bold as can be, for better and worse. william b Extremely disjointed and hard to watch. Nevertheless, the cinematographer did a great job of capturing the feel of burning man. So I'm splitting the difference and giving it 2 and a half stars. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/21 Full Review Audience Member A muddled headache of a film that evokes feelings of a severe hangover as opposed to the bliss of intoxication that it should. The surroundings of the festival had an atmosphere of sinister eeriness, the characters and storyline left me feeling detached and unmoved. An emotional dust-storm, both literally and metaphorically. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Arin Crumley (of Four Eyed Monsters fame) has completed a new film, Matter Out Of Place (M-O-O-P), which is exactly what I was hoping for as a follow-up to his 2005 award-winning film. Like Four Eyed Monsters, MOOP crawls beneath the skin of love lusting lost souls caught in modern connectivity loops as we see-saw between technology and IRL. In this case leading us into the increasingly sought-after space of being "off the grid." But before you think this is just some typical millennial angst movie, hold your unicorns. Set (and shot) amidst a popular desert festival - MOOP's creation story and final result is as valid of an experiential art piece as any installation at Burning Man. Shot docu-style with actors playing themselves, the film is loose in narrative but deep on intention, providing many layers for viewers to bring their own experiences to the journey. With stunning cinematography, beautifully integrated animation and graphics and intricate wardrobe, MOOP ascends into a fever dream that remains relatable to all who have ever fallen in and out of love or even simply attended a festival like Burning Man or even summer camp. While Crumley has stated he has moved past motion pictures (and is focussing his big picture ideas towards climate issues) - his second feature proves that he may just be a once-a-decade bard, checking in to ensure we don't lose touch with human connection and reflection amongst ever-increasing distraction.
