After being held captive for seven years in the Middle East, Kolya (Yevgeni Mironov), a Russian solider fighting in the Soviet War in Afghanistan, has finally been freed and is returning to his village in Russia. Upon his arrival, he finds the entire village there to greet him, but the mood quickly shifts when Kolya refuses the vodka given to him and reveals he has converted to Islam during his absence. Meanwhile, with the rise of capitalism, the village has fallen into disrepair.

Virgo V A Moslem (Musulmanin) is a 1995 Russian drama film directed by Vladimir Khotinenko. The film was selected as the Russian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 68th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. A Moslem won many awards, including Best Film of the Year at the Montreal World Film Festival. It also won awards at the Kinotavr, Nika and International Festival of Orthodox film festivals.
