August 2007. Isolated in his austere penthouse overlooking Central Park, obsessive Wall Street data analyst Richard Boca (Beau Knapp) sees ominous patterns: His computer models are behaving erratically, as are the swarms of mosquitos breeding in his apartment, an infestation that attends his psychological meltdown. On Wall Street, they're called "quants"--the intense data analysts whose mathematical prowess can make the difference between a fortune and a flop. Consumed with his work, Richard doesn't often stray from his office or apartment. But when Richard decides to go to a company party, he makes two acquaintances: the mysterious, sylphlike Lena (Charlotte Vega) and one pesky mosquito, both of which take root in his mind, altering his existence in profound ways.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News It makes for an interesting experiment more than a satisfying movie. Rated: 2/4 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com What's really wrong with Richard is that he's a boring monster. Rated: 1/4 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Borne along on the whine of insects and a lead performance of surpassing strangeness, "Mosquito State" is a disquieting merger of body horror and social commentary. Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Emma Stefansky Thrillist The slow, hypnotic vibe of the movie lends a dreamlike quality to the proceedings, even though by the end it feels like more of a nightmare. Sep 16, 2021 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Filip Jan Rymsza's Mosquito State is a stylish but pretentious attempt at body-horror as political allegory, too self-important to be fun, its social commentary (a la Candyman) too caricatured to be incisive. Sep 13, 2021 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Rymsza's approach to horror is startlingly personal, even if everything is simply far too mannered to resonate in a meaningful way. Audience Member Overall, the truth is, there has never been a film like this. Mosquito State is certainly different and creative.  Thanks to the top performances and stunning visuals, including the filming style, it is all quite engaging. The plot won't be for everyone, but I felt quite appreciative of the experience. It's an interesting journey, but sadly, I felt the film's ending and climax deserved something stronger instead of something which felt rather vague. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Stephen C The greatest 01 hour: and 40 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/31/22 Full Review Audience Member hmm; i'm not sure i really understood what was happening the whole time, but I did kind of like it for some reason. maybe just because it was weird? i find bugs to be a fascinating horror trope - I don't know anyone that likes them & if there's too many, you physically can't keep them off you if you tried. bottom line: they'll get you. & that's kind of scary. granted, these bugs don't really do anything to anyone except our main character, so I'm not sure i'd call this a horror movie... but a few scenes are really visually interesting & I loved how they staged the film with the same stages of life for a mosquito. watching their life cycle was actually quite cool. idk. the more I think about it, the more I think I liked it - however I don't think this is a movie i'd recommend to anyone else. it's pretty slow & boring for a movie, to be completely honest. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member It's an artistic horror movie where you feel lost most of the time. However, there are a handFYI if tense scenes, and there is some room left for the imagination to assume things like: does he actually control the mosquitos? Similar to the movie "Deerskin" in that you're not sure if the main character is delusional or if this is really happening at all, although this is a much worse movie. His mosquito bites deform him in a way that make his character creepier as the movie goes on. Makes you keep watching. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
