Katie Rife IGN Movies The practical effects and grotesque puppet design are appealing... But inconsistent performances and contradictory characterizations make it difficult to invest in the real-world stakes. Rated: 5/10 Oct 11, 2024 Full Review Britt Hayes MovieWeb Set in 1993, with a VHS aesthetic and gory practical effects to match, Mr. Crocket spins millennial nostalgia into a perfectly passable supernatural parable. Rated: 3/5 Nov 5, 2024 Full Review Julian Lytle RIOTUS Mr. Crocket is a good Halloween horror movie and a concept to start a cool Hulu franchise if it’s given the opportunity. This could be a fun watch for you on October 31st. Rated: C+ Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof Modest but full of ideas, Mr. Crocket is a horror noir that turns a Bill Cosby type into a Freddy Krueger for those with '90s nostalgia. Oct 20, 2024 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online Equal parts fun and frightening with a fantastic lead performance and cool practical effects, Mr. Crocket injects some colour and humour into the genre that we haven’t seen for some time, though the script could’ve used some finer tuning. Matthew K Mr. Crocket is a fun spooky movie, the practical effects similar to DHMIS give some great scares and the visual effects are immersive and magical for a 90's feel. All the characters were captivating with interesting backstory, especially Mr Crocket. Eager to see what the Director and cast do next. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/25 Full Review BadNews R Mr. Crocket is one of those horror movies that instantly makes you tilt your head and say, “Okay, that’s different.” Instead of following the typical “masked white male slasher” formula, this film gives us an African-American male killer with a Pee-wee Herman–style personality—playful, childlike, goofy on the surface—but twisted into something grotesque and terrifying. The concept itself is fresh, and the lead actor absolutely leans into it. His performance is unsettling, quirky, and genuinely creepy at times. He’s by far the standout and the reason this film isn’t a total miss. Unfortunately, everything around him doesn’t live up to that same level. The film clearly had a very limited budget, and it shows in the sets, effects, and pacing. Some of the character designs were fun and looked good for what they had to work with, but the rest of the production just couldn’t match the ambition of the central idea. The supporting cast felt flat, subpar, and at times almost unbelievable in their delivery. There were moments where the tension should have skyrocketed, but instead it fizzled out because the performances didn’t carry the weight. That said, I can’t call this movie a waste, because I genuinely think Mr. Crocket as a character has real horror potential. With stronger writing, a more polished script, and a bigger budget, this concept could actually spawn a new cult-classic slasher. The Pee-wee Herman–style personality flipped into a sadistic killer is something horror hasn’t really seen before in this way, and if done right, it could cement Mr. Crocket as a creepy new face in the slasher encyclopedia. As it stands now, though, the film feels more like a rough draft of what could have been. A fascinating character in the middle of a movie that just doesn’t quite know how to handle him. I left the film thinking less about the story itself and more about the possibilities if this idea were handed to a stronger creative team. Verdict: A mixed bag. The lead actor is excellent, the concept is chillingly fun, but the rest of the film simply doesn’t rise to the occasion. Still, Mr. Crocket could be worth revisiting in the future—maybe even in a reboot or franchise starter—because the groundwork for a memorable horror villain is definitely here. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/25 Full Review bensy a Definitely an enjoyable watch, some of the actors are sub par and the story telling is basic, explains things that don't need to be explained leading to very little rewatch value. However the effects are Definitely entertaining and the few kills there are, are genuinely hilarious. Didn't feel a waste of an hour and a half. It's not a great horror film but it isn't the worse and doesn't over stay it's welcome. Tldr | it's a goofy horror film and doesn't try to be anything more than that so if that's your thing give it a watch Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/09/25 Full Review August M The best way to describe this movie is if Mr. Rogers neighborhood became a Horror movie and Mr. Rogers himself was a demonic cold blooded killer who’s just as brutal as Art The Clown. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Lee B Such a waste of time. Trash!!!! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/30/25 Full Review Stuart R The [ideas] and the [world of] the movie had me invested, but the writing kept the film from fully landing. 🍀 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
