Icarus A What makes Mr. Hockey a stand out is the acting. Shanks brings the amiable-but-tough Howe to life, while Kathleen Robertson gives a vivid portrayal of his wife, Colleen Howe: a woman as smart as she is strong. Dylan Playfair is excellent as the soft-voiced and shy Marty Howe, and Andrew Herr also is convincing as the more rebellious Mark Howe, while Emma Grabinsky makes the most of a thankless role as the family's teenage naysayer. Like many Canadian films, Mr. Hockey has a slow start and thoughtful build. It evades the rise to fame cliché and sticks to Gordie Howe's remarkable return to the ice in his mid-40's. It's less about Howe and more about his family dynamics as he returns to the ice to skate alongside his two sons. My only complaint is that the buildup about what will happen to the family if the two hockey leagues (the NHL and the WHA) were to merge goes nowhere. Instead, the movie closes on a more predictable Gordie Howe triumph joining the All-Stars hockey player team still playing at the age of 52.
