Isa B This film is well-written, well acted, supremely suspenseful and quite entertaining. I love the method used to tell the story in the beginning. They tell you what's going on without telling you. This is during World War II and the Jewish people living in France are under quite a bit of scrutiny. Some of them leaving, as we see with the gentleman selling the painting. The plot is confusing at times and the film's end is open-ended. A great film nonetheless. 94/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Harry K One of the most interesting, and complex films about the Holocaust, and life during Vichy France...very important to viewers in helping convey the idea of the Holocaust as a story of perpetrators, victims and bystanders...truly a warning to contemporary liberals, ambivalent non-politicals, or amoral opportunists how quickly the thresher of fascism grinds up society...an important film, well-worth your time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/23 Full Review jbriskey1 Unintelligible undecipherable drivel. Art film at its worst. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member My first viewing of "Mr. Klein" was a frustrating and underwhelming experience; I had seen a film which felt dreary and lethargic, and I hadn't fully grasped the details of the story. My second viewing proved more fruitful, in that I appreciated to a greater extent the ominous sense of dread that builds unobtrusively over the course of the film's understated events. Much of the film's strengths derive from its undercurrent of foreboding doom, and when we're able to tap into it, we sense the Kafkaesque infusion of paranoia that fully animates the events on the screen. In truth, viewing "Mr. Klein" has the subtle feel of an academic exercise, in that its appeal derives from the ability to recognize the preceding material comprising its source inspiration. That being said, Losey surely succeeds in crafting an intense vision of alienation intertwined with the bleak consequences of personal obsession. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a vaguely Kafkaesque tale of mistaken identity mixed with the plot of The Third Man, where the other, Jewish Mr. Klein is Harry Lime, and our Mr Klein, who is seeking him, is always one step behind. It's about as fun as a Holocaust-set film can be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A masterful depiction of a man's personal identity disintegrating under the discriminatory judgements of his society. Everything - mood, colour, music, setting - comes together superbly to produce a film as searingly relevant today as it was in Occupied France. All crowned by an outstanding Alain Delon performance.
