Critics Consensus

Mr. Ricco is a sluggish, credibility-stretching legal thriller weighed down by Dean Martin's lifeless performance and a painfully slow buildup.

It's a formula action movie that offers a largely coherent plot, dialogue that isn't insulting and occasionally is witty. Go to Full Review

Robert Hoban's screenplay plays fast and loose with credibility, relying on the audience's knee-jerk reaction to police corruption to tie up the loose ends. Go to Full Review

It's such a clumsy movie it makes all the actor look dreadful, which may or may not be the fact. Go to Full Review

There are a few strings that never tie in this movie, but with all its faults, it is not boring, and there is something to be said for that. Go to Full Review

The actor's excessive nonchalance undermines the drama, although an assassination sequence is tensely handled by Marlowe director Paul Bogart. Go to Full Review

Jithin K Feb 20 An underrated film that tries to say a lot about racial tensions as well as the way police enforce their version of justice. It really paints a picture of the 70s America pretty well. Surprised to see the general negative reception it got. The twist at the end was predictable and a certain scene before the climactic events makes it clear who the culprit is. Most people talking about this seem to know about Dean Martin and talk about his performance through that lens. I think my not knowing much about him helped me enjoy his performance a lot more. See more Steve D 08/10/2023 Not sure what it wants to say but it sure is unpleasant . See more 08/19/2019 Many, many scenes leading to a desolate ending. Nice to have seen some fine actors at the beginning of their careers including Denise Nicholas, Cindy Williams and Philip Thomas. Strong performances by Eugene Roche and Thalmus Rasulala. Dean Martin's compelling performance lends much credibility to the script. He is the reason to watch this movie. See more 09/27/2018 Dean Martin has enough charisma to make me watch anything he's in. Especially when he plays a straight character, beyond his booze and broads persona. Thanks Dean. See more 09/03/2016 Odd later career Dean Martin vehicle where her plays a San Francisco attorney who defends a black militant accused of murder. The film has some Dirty Harry grit to it, which is kind of fun, the Martin seems about as out of place in this film as did John Wayne in his attempt to break into Dirty Harry-type of pictures with "McQ." Still, it's not terrible and you do get a young Cindy Williams and Philip Michael Thomas, which is kind of fun.
