In this touching comedy, Wilbert Winkle (Edward G. Robinson) has secure employment and a steady, if unsatisfying, marriage to Amy (Ruth Warrick). However, struck by the feeling that he has unfulfilled potential, Wilbert leaves his longtime bank job to open a business. But this is the early 1940s, and with America embroiled in World War II, Wilbert is soon wearing an Army uniform. Dispatched to the Pacific theater, he and pal Tinker (Robert Armstrong) find themselves in the thick of battle.

Audience Member Edward G. Robinson playing way, way against type as a mild-mannered schlub makes this little piece of WWII propaganda worth seeking out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Edward G. Robinson plays an uncharacteristic meek, mild-mannered middle aged man in this WW2 patriotic film; who after leaving his book-keeping job of 15 years - begins to prepare to open a fix-it shop in his backyard (much to his wife's dismay) causing trouble between the two of them, but he is determined to do the work that makes him happy. He receives a call to duty notice in the mail though and finds himself drafted into the army, only to find that there too they want to put him behind a desk and he must fight not only to do the work he likes the best, but for his country as well. It's a little hoaky, yes..but I found it really very enjoyable to see Edward G. Robinson in this role that was very different from many of his others. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Delightful film with an excellent Edward G Robinson performance, as always. Well written and a good story. Worth watching just to see Robinson. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
