Mulan

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It could have told its classic story with greater depth, but the live-action Mulan is a visual marvel that serves as a stirring update to its animated predecessor.

Peter Travers ABC News At its core, Caro's "Mulan" is quietly revolutionary, as it revels in the exhilarating sight of a young woman fighting for and earning her place in the world. Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Roslyn Talusan Bitch Media I can only describe Mulan as a visually spectacular disappointment. Void of any emotional resonance, the film eschews coherent storytelling for what amounts to an Orientalist war epic masquerading as a feminist win for Asians everywhere. Mar 16, 2021 Full Review K. Austin Collins Rolling Stone Its cast, its attitude, its overall eagerness to please -- all benefits, one would think -- don't add up to a good movie. They add up to a blueprint of the movie this ought to be. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 23, 2020 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net MULAN is a film best described as an “if only” production. If only the script had the input from actual Chinese people. If only it didn’t treat the culture, history, and mythology like a cheap prop. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews Even though Niki Caro delivers the realistic, distinct take that was promised, its execution feels inferior to the original animated film in every single way. The 1998’s movie is far more epic and cinematic than its remake. Rated: C- Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan The critical differences in the movie change a lot of Mulan’s character traits, and it is evident that the writers missed the opportunity to make her special. Lucas E Esse e o pior live ections da Disney tirarão o musical tirarão personagens icônicos do filme. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review James K Worst out of all the live action Disney remakes and that is saying something because they were all terrible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Maria O Just didn't enjoy it. The original was much better. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Cerdos C Removed a lot of important parts. No songs either? They got rid of mushu which hurt a lot. I think it could've been better, because at some point it just became one of those indian drama shows, kinda cheesy lol. You can watch it, but it's likely you won't enjoy it Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Ant M I made an account just to write this review. Literally couldn’t even force myself to finish the movie. I was instantly disappointed in the first couple minutes. First of all the Huns don’t exist as the enemy army, they completely took away and changed them to whatever they are called (I didn’t care enough to look it up before writing this because it literally wasn’t even worth it). Second, one of the first main scenes you see is a desert scene with a female sorcerer (?) which is just nothing close to the original animated version with the stunning mountains and snow scenes etc. Third and most annoying, NO MUSHU! A non talking phoenix??? That took me out if nothing else did. Fourth, no comedy or emotional singing, the emperor is an idiot and the love interest isn’t even her commanding officer it’s a soldier…? They completely changed everything and thought that the idea of a nostalgic movie would win over everyone. WRONG. The MOST DISAPPOINTING MOVIE I’ve ever seen Disney put out into the world. Don’t bother wasting you’re time, it’s nothing like the original which was 100 time better without even trying. This was aggravating and disappointing to the max, and just made you mad for watching as much of it as you can possibly manage which for me wasn’t even half way through before I couldn’t stomach it and turned it off. If you attempted to watch the live action Avatar the last air bender movie after being a fan of the animate series ATLA, then you’ll understand what I mean. A total sh*t show dressed up as a good movie. Save yourself the time and aggravation and STAY AWAY. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Yates M Why are these movies and shows so bad at writing strong females now? They all seem to make the same mistake. They want their yas queen girl boss moments and skip over any character development. Exceptions being House of the Dragon - that should the growth and struggle and complexity of strong female characters. This was just so bad compared to the original movie.
