isla s This is obviously a very sentimental film, due to the story. Its quite sad of course and poignant and it features a good performance bt Emilia Fox as the ill mother in question. You may well need some tissues for this one. It is perhaps a little cliched some may say but then again, this sort of film should be - it wouldn't really make sense otherwise, if you know what I mean?. I didn't feel it was overly and unnecessarily mawkish I suppose. It wont suit everyone as we maybe prefer to look for happier films but there is a bit of an uplifting message to it, in as much as what the list the mum left behind meant to the relatives. It has the look of a BBC drama, more than a full blown film, British or Hollywood, really but otherwise I can't think of much else to say about this. If your looking for a poignant and sad but somewhat uplifting film, then this is worth seeing, yes, although, as I say, you can pretty much guess the films story from the start but perhaps that's not entirely the point... oh yeah and 'acres and acres!'. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Touching with strong performances by Fox and Spall; heavy on sentimentality and preciousness that it feels borderline maudlin Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Having had cancer, and survived, it has personal emotional appeal. Brought tears to my eyes. That never used to happen pre the big C. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Just watched this film. Loved it . So emotional and a lovely way for a family to remember her when shes gone. As someone whos been through this it brought back memories and i cried through most of the film. Great soundtrack too Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review farah r Mum's List is emotional and easy to connect with but the plodding pace and incoherent timeline jumps ruin the impact the movie is supposed to have. Donald Clarke Irish Times The film is an incoherent mess that may prove baffling to those unfamiliar with the source. Rated: 2/5 Nov 26, 2016 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is managed with honesty, dignity and conviction, and there are very real moments of personal pain. Rated: 4/5 Nov 24, 2016 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The encounters with doctors and the hospital scenes are often chilling. Nonetheless, there is a plodding sentimentality and predictability here which stop the film from having the emotional kick that might have been expected. Rated: 2/5 Nov 23, 2016 Full Review Jordi Costa El Pais (Spain) Mum's List director Neill Johnson locks Rafe Spall in a very different version of hell, whose 101 minutes of footage weighed on the perception of this critic as if the amount had also been multiplied by a thousand. [Full Review in Spanish] Nov 16, 2018 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk The scene at a dinner party in which Spall's Singe likens the pain of bereavement to struggling against the sea's undertow will knock you off your feet. Rated: 4/5 Nov 12, 2017 Full Review Matthew Bond The Mail on Sunday (UK) It's a tough watch but a powerful one, and beautifully acted not just by Fox and Spall but by William and Matthew Stagg, as their young sons. Well done, boys. Rated: 4/5 Oct 17, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
