It’s hard not to yearn for the initial (simpler) story of a battered woman seeking refuge with an older, protective mother figure, in part because everything in the first half of the film works so well, including Coyne and Manzoline['s performances].

Perfect dark, murder/mystery summertime, movie before bedtime! straightforward plot. what makes it believable and somewhat scary is that, this could actually happen.
