Critics Consensus

Murder Mystery reunites Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler for a lightweight comedy that's content to settle for merely mediocre.

Wenlei Ma News.com.au Murder Mystery's predictability and cliches are comforting - which has entertainment value if you're not looking to be challenged for 90 minutes. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Watching Murder Mystery is a slog, and I still can't comprehend how the same dude who wrote Zodiac wrote this, and oh, did I mention this movie steals one of its final reveals from Legally Blonde? Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Karen Han Polygon It's no Punch-Drunk Love, but it's on the better end of the spectrum when it comes to Sandler's streaming selections. Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Sonali Kokra Firstpost Not all bad. It’s just bad as a murder mystery. What does it say about a thriller if its best parts are not the actual murder or the clues that lead you to the killer, but the squabbling, grumbling interactions of a bored, middle-aged couple? May 15, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s not fresh enough to be called original and not smart enough to be called a parody. Rated: 2/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Lonita Cook KCTV5 News at 9 I'm not criticizing character development or anything like that, I just kicked back... and watched a good movie. Ryland C REALLY GOOD! I like that it takes a comedic take on a very serious topic. It’s fun. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Jennifairy G Absolutely woeful - a tired plot that's been done so much better by others. The main characters (Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler) are caricatures of the worst American tourists you hopefully never have the misfortune to meet, banging the "America is the greatest" drum yet again. It's almost satire except they seem to believe it so fervently and consistently. And they still think dick jokes (so, so many of them in this movie) are funny. Honestly, cleaning out my dog's anal glands would have been a better use of my time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/25 Full Review Conrad C Not the most believable of plots that leans heavily on its star power to carry its audience from point A to point B. Sandler and Anniston put in performances worthy of the roles they're given. The movie lives up to its name and delivers what it promises at first glance. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Koi P Fun and entertaining. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Audience Member This won't be on many lists for all time greats, but it does about what you'd expect. It has a few laughs, you get to see some weird characters, and enjoy a few attractive people in beautiful locations. The plot is a little absurd, but you can't say you didn't see that coming. It's a take on the old who done it films and follows it with twists and turns, some unexpected, some delightful. The ending is a bit on the ridiculous side but this may be one of the more plausible Adam Sandler movies out there. And it doesn't involve his usual cohort of buddies who are in every single movie he's Sandler is in.
