Critics Consensus

Stylish production and an all-star ensemble keep this Murder on the Orient Express from running off the rails, even if it never quite builds up to its classic predecessor's illustrious head of steam.

Mar 25, 2020 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine [Kenneth Branagh] doesn't bring much new to the basic conception-a bunch of famous actors play eccentrics cooped up on a train, with secrets to be unearthed. But he does embellish the template with glossy extras. Julia P What an absolute garbage adaptation of such a brilliant Agatha Cristie novel. I understand why people would rate it 5 stars when they haven't read the book, as the cinematography is mostly well done and the cast is spectacular. However, it just falls completely short at the total mischaracterisation of the main character - Hercule Poirot - and of several other side characters. Nothing gets explained, just wild guesses, and then absolutely out of nowhere there's just action and guns and fights and stabbings that simply do not belong into this story. I cannot believe i actually finished the movie, because it was just a complete reimagination of the original plot and should not be allowed to carry the same title as the novel. They even added some characters that should not even appear in this story but in some other Hercule Poirot stories!?!! Who wrote this thing and then passed it off as a hood adaptation? Anyway, I'm so mad, so so mad, that this brilliantly talented cast was wasted on a movie that feels like someone had a fever dream or high on crack had written the plot. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Mark B I’ve never ever seen Agatha Christie novel adaptation before. In my opinion, this movie is the best “Murder on the Orient Express” adaptation Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review Dylan H An unusual whodunit film with an all star cast that spins many mysterious webs but falls flat in the end. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Tristan C Not sure what people didn't like about this film. Wonderfully scripted, great cast, beautiful colour and cinematography and a moving story. Definitely worth the watch :) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Skye D I loved this I don’t know why it didn’t do better with audiences. I found it captivating and very moving. The characters are enchanting and they literally looked like they popped out of the book which the movie is based on. I like that they stuck to that style . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/11/24 Full Review Eszter S Michelle Pfeiffer did an amazing job with her character, such a delight! While there were some parts I found too cheesy, I enjoyed this movie a lot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
