Joe Leydon Variety Pic as a whole is well-crafted and compelling. Sep 8, 2007 Full Review Noel Murray AV Club [It's] about the painstaking process behind what seems so off-the-cuff. Rated: B+ Sep 7, 2007 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz New York Times Daniel Kraus's Musician feels radically fresh: It simply observes its title character in the manner of a 1960s fly-on-the-wall documentary. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 5, 2007 Full Review Kam Williams DallasBlack.com A fascinating documentary made memorable not by its music but by its poignant portrait of a likable, if narrowly-focused, purist unwilling to compromise his values, regardless of its cost in terms of fame or his career. Audience Member Not bad... my biggest complaint is the dearth of musical performances, most of which are relegated to "deleted scenes." We could have done with less shots of Ken schleping his bags around and more scenes of working through numbers in rehearsal or performing. And oh yeah... more Fred. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a bit different from any documentary I've seen before. The completely absent film crew allowed for something amazing to happen on screen: the exact picture of a struggling musician and the life that he lives. The music is difficult to the ear, challenging, and exciting, and the performer/composer behind it is an artist throughout. There are some issues with some of the shots, and a few sound problems here and there, but considering the circumstances, I let em go. I only wish that there were moments where the band were rehearsing, as those few scenes were intersting, and the only place where the viewer isn't allowed much into the mind of the working musician. Great film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
