      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Visually polished but narratively derivative and overall muddled, Mute is a would-be sci-fi epic whose title serves as an unfortunate guide to how it might be best enjoyed.

Richard M I thought it suberbly acted, interesting plot and love story, great scenes, gripping, I liked it, great part for Paul Rudd whacked out psychopath war surgeon. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Jonathan E I loved the character development and near-future elements of this movie. I found myself on the edge as the director slowly revealed those who appeared to be admirable slowly revealed their evil sides. But even when revealed, those evil characters have their own moral codes that place them in conflict. The future setting was so offsetting — as if one were to go asleep in 2000 and wake up in 2010. The protagonist represents the view -- trying to figure out how this world works while seemingly unable to influence events. Same world, but so much had changed without explanation. The love chemistry underpinning the story works with all three characters. The movie is slow-passed, dark, and mostly unforgiving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review J A truly original movie not necessarily made for mainstream movie watchers hoping for a simple plot and traditional Hollywood cliches. It's beautifully crafted, nuanced in it's approach to character development and motivation, and every single actor in the film nailed their role. One of the few films I've given 5 stars, but it is certainly worth the watch if you're willing to give it the attention and thought it deserves. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review max a A great movie, seems disconnected and confusing at first but half the fun is figuring things out and not everything being what you expected. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Solomon G I don't understand these reviews - I thought it was brilliant. I understood what was happening perfectly and thought it was a really refreshing watch Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Todd M Had fun bits of clever humor, and dark weird dystopian stuff, sets with a Bladerunner vibe. And I kept wanting to love it! But there just keep kind of being nothing to hold onto. The main character was cool. But otherwise it's more like a few plot ideas were just mashed into a script by AI or drunk humans. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Worth checking out once you've seen Netflix's Annihilation, but before you get into Altered Carbon. Mar 28, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) As a production project it was, apparently, stuck in "development hell" for more than a decade. Sometimes projects are stuck in development hell for a reason. Rated: 1/5 Mar 9, 2018 Full Review David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture Mute is pretty meh but gets points for randomness. Mar 2, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Mute disappoints in the worst way, by evoking only bothersome indifference. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Andrew Gaudion THN A frustrating, bewildering and nonsensical disappointment that offers little that feels new and fails to craft a mystery that sparks intrigue in a world that feels hazily defined. Rated: 2/5 Aug 30, 2020 Full Review Fiona Underhill JumpCut Online I see it as a positive that films like this can be released and they won't please everyone, but are at least experimental and interesting. I would encourage people to give it a chance, particularly if you have enjoyed modern-day twists on noir. Rated: 7/10 Jul 2, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
