Rick Groen Globe and Mail his is just unabashed melodrama, complete with mustachioed villain and wicked stepmother and wronged heroine and rescuing hero, all tied up in a love story sweet enough to make Hollywood blush. Rated: 2/4 Jan 29, 2010 Full Review Betsy Sharkey Los Angeles Times While the story is a dark and difficult one, the players in this morality tale are bathed in light and lost within breathtaking landscapes thanks to director of photography Mirsad Herovic. Rated: 4/5 Oct 8, 2009 Full Review Walter V. Addiego San Francisco Chronicle Director Abdullah Oguz gives us lots of nice scenery, but the simplistic story and characters strain credibility. What's more, the climactic plot turn is as hokey as it gets. Rated: 2/4 Sep 4, 2009 Full Review Sam Blan emel Juxtaposing such a deplorable subject with backdrops and colors that are vivid and vibrant truly speak of the spirit of our young heroine and how she overcomes the misfortune that befalls her. dave s In remote and rural Turkey, a teenage girl (Ozgu Namal) is found on the muddy banks of a lake after being sexually assaulted and left for dead. As per custom, she is sentenced to die and is escorted from the town by a distant cousin (Murat Han), who has been ordered to commit the execution. The first portion of the film is nothing short of brilliant, including a masterfully shot scene on the stairs of a bridge where the killing is to take place, featuring strong performances and striking cinematography that allows the images to tell the story instead of excessive dialogue. Sadly, the remainder of the film stinks of Hollywood excess as the powerful story degenerates into a maudlin and melodramatic mess with what feels like a tacked on surprise ending. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Ozgu Namal is luminous. Slightly amateur and a quick formulaic resolution. Well worth the cultural and religious discomfort evoked. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie tackles the subject of Honor killing in the Islam religion. Luckily, it's more about running away and showing compassion than about killing a girl that had been raped. By the end of this movie, you will love Meryum and be sympathetic towards the man tasked with executing her. Surprisingly good movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Watching this movie changed my perspective on women. Often I take the liberty of b*t*hing about my life when there are so many women out there who are put through injustice! Loved this film.
