The ending isn’t like an average formulaic rom-com. It resists the urge to unite the would-be lovers at any cost. However, aside from an array of plot holes (like the email blunder) the issue is how the protagonist is framed. She is introduced as an independent woman, explicitly shown that she doesn’t think she needs a man or a romantic relationship. Yet, as the story unfolds, she realizes (through jealousy rather than self-reflection) just how desperately she wants him. In the end, she loses him to a more traditional, self-sacrificing woman. The underlying message seems to be that a self-reliant, modern woman is emotionally stunted, and her pride becomes her downfall, while a male character with similarly ambitious, emotionally reserved traits is rewarded with a wealthy, supportive wife, no less.
