Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter This low-budget effort lacks the wit necessary to sustain its brief 80-minute running time. Dec 29, 2005 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times My Big Fat Independent Movie is a frenetic attempt to spoof every major art-house film of the last decade. Rated: 2/5 Nov 28, 2005 Full Review Lou Lumenick New York Post This painfully unfunny spoof promises to do for independent movies what Airplane! did for disaster movies, but mostly what My Big Fat Independent Movie does is demonstrate the ineptitude of its makers. Rated: 1/4 Nov 28, 2005 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...unrelentingly amateurish... Rated: 1/4 Jan 14, 2006 Full Review Maitland McDonagh TV Guide The juvenile gags seem aimed at moviegoers who hate the whole idea of independent/art/foreign-language films and the stuck-up eggheads who like them -- so what's the point? Rated: 1/4 Nov 30, 2005 Full Review Phil Hall Film Threat Hilarious parody of contemporary indie cinema. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 24, 2005 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This is one of the few spoof movies that you really don't get the jokes unless you've seen the movies they're making fun of. Essentials to see before this movie are Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Memento, Amelie, and Swingers. Some movies like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Run Lola Run are important too for the occasional joke. But if you're familiar with these movies, this is hilarious. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Watch it once. And then don't ever watch it again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member As almost every spoof movie in the past 20 years, this movie fails miserably. The secret to the spoof is simple: great cast + a good story that makes fun of, but is never dependent, on the "source" material. This movie has neither. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is pretty entertaining. I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember actually enjoy this take on the "____ movie" franchise! :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This was actually a decent spoof. The Friedberg/Seltzer movies always made me groan and roll me eyes. This movie: got some big laughs, some chuckles, some "hehs". And I've seen all these movies they do. It was pretty amusing.
