Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor You get a strong whiff of what it must have been like to be Johnny Cash, or his exasperated manager, from this film. It would make a good companion piece to "Walk the Line. Rated: B Sep 13, 2013 Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic It's good that Holiff wants to unlock this puzzle, but Cash is so compelling a figure that he is ultimately the only character we truly care about. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 12, 2013 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com This has the potential to be dreadfully maudlin stuff, but the film is too damn interesting to be maudlin. Rated: 3/4 Sep 10, 2013 Full Review Sarah Brinks Battleship Pretension Even with the distracting narration My Father and the Man in Black is a well made documentary with details about both Saul Holiff and Johnny Cash that until now were lost to the annals of time. Feb 24, 2021 Full Review Sophie Kingston-Smith CineVue The strengths of this documentary lie in the story itself, and it's clear that Holiff is a natural storyteller. He is not an engaging narrator however, and his delivery is often monotone and expressionless. Rated: 3/5 Feb 27, 2019 Full Review Austin Trunick Under the Radar It's certainly a more enlightening look than any big-budget Hollywood biopic could offer. Audience Member A very poignant documentary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member It's an interesting story, but too many times it falls into self indulgence and if anything it's message is 'Whoa look at me, the neglected son' Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting documentary about Jonathon Holiff's search for understanding of his father, Saul who was Johnny Cash's Manager. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved the film, as it gave me a real view of how people have to struggle, but they can still make it if they keep trying.I flew all the way from London Ontario to Vancouver, took a ferry to the island to see my friends film. I had already seen it in London, but it was worth a few more looks, saw it 4 more times on CityTV, twice a night. great film, and my little brother and big sister are in it for about 1 second. thanks for the memories. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Are you kidding? This is a great film!
