Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Cinematographer Lutz Konermann captures the backbreaking beauty of it all, while director Pacha finds her way into the very heart of this timeless ritual. Rated: 4/5 Mar 15, 2015 Full Review David Parkinson Empire Magazine Punishingly poetic profile filmed in breathtaking surroundings. Rated: 4/5 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Sophie Monks Kaufman Little White Lies A sleepy take on back-breaking labour. Rated: 2/5 Mar 12, 2015 Full Review Ben Homewood NME (New Musical Express) The tender moments can't mask the strain on Pacha's subjects, who are forced away when monsoon season submerges the plains, only to return months later and start all over again. Rated: 3.5/5 May 27, 2021 Full Review Allie Gemmill CineVue t makes for an impressionistic documentary that moves outside of the structure of its genre in favour of a more visually reliant and stimulating narrative. Rated: 4/5 Apr 4, 2019 Full Review Alistair Harkness Scotsman The infinitesimal nature of humankind in the face of the environment is poetically essayed in this starkly beautiful documentary about a salt farmer and his family's seasonal struggle to earn a living from India's Gujarati desert. andrew p One of the most mundane, yet beautifully shot documentaries I've ever seen. The subject matter is relatively boring in itself (harvesting salt). Yet, the pacing, framing, and editing of the film makes it a breathtaking watch from start to finish. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Merrick S Pure cinematic gold. A quietly absorbing, intimate portrait of hard-working humble Indian families who spend 8 months of the year harvesting "the world's whitest salt" in the Gujarati desert. The film tells the story without intrusive narration; as a result the physical elements of the task have an unalloyed impact missing from, say, a Hollywood explosion. The ravishing cinematography reveals the stark beauty of an otherwise forbidding desert, carrying the simple yet profound narrative concept into the realm of art. Should be required viewing for first-world children. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/20 Full Review Audience Member Very little dialect, obviously nothing I could understand but I was absolutely mesmerized by this documentary. Must see ....
