Penelope Gilliatt The New Yorker Not many people could have done what Rohmer has. It is a very delicate triumph for the talkies, and the ending of his picture hangs there like the close of a great short story. Jan 23, 2024 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times My Night at Maud's is about love, being a Roman Catholic, body language and the games people play. It is just about the best movie I've seen on all four subjects. Rated: 4/4 Jul 3, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian A date movie with a touch of class. Rated: 4/5 Jul 22, 2010 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies As with all French New Wave films, this one still feels fresh and unique. Nearly fifty years after its release you still see it bucking trends and plowing new ground. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Few directors are as adept as Rohmer at capturing the messy morality of life. Rated: 3/4 May 23, 2020 Full Review Lewis Teague Los Angeles Free Press How this is made into absorbing material that elicits the easy concentration of the audience is tribute to the fine acting of Jean-Louis Trintignant and Francoise Fabien, and the relaxed intelligent direction of Eric Rohmer. babarizam Its an interesting movie. A dialogue between faith and humanity. Even if irritates you, one can never deny that its a work of art. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Noel P Second film I watched on Eric Rohmer's filmography. What can I say? He's a masterful director and an actor's dream -- you can tell by how comfortable his actors are, and the dialogue is so natural. Visually, it also makes me respect the choice of black and white more and more, which worked perfectly for this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/23 Full Review david b I think this film reflects more on our moralistic and religious backgrounds vs our ability to become the people we imagine and fantasise we are. I instantly recognised episodes in my life from this and enjoyed the sentiment behind this. I was actually surprised that a film from the nouvelle vague canon had such a sophisticated and restrained underpinning. if you are an over-thinker this film was made for you. Take a holiday in its premise and spend time with its characters, it feels like time travel. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it - superb performances. Jean Louis Trintignant's performance is wonderful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review William L Rohmer takes on an aspect of romance that is seldom embraced in serious drama - the 'feeling out' phase, where interest, passion, and nervousness each play out in a slow dance of word games and barely shrouded innuendo. It's in this early battlefield that we get to see the struggle of romantic entanglement as logic (the frequent discussions of Pascal) battles passion for dominance. This tug-of-war effecively gives us something of a mess of morality as Trintignant's Jean-Louis and his small social group each independently make their way through their respective pursuits, dragging along with them their emotional and cultural baggage. A well-acted conversational drama that gives complexity to intimacy even if it likes to relish in the overt philosophicaly discussions for a bit longer than necessary. (3.5/5) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/25/21 Full Review andres s The camera work is great. It's very straightforward in letting you know what you should be looking at and what is important. The blonde girl in the church has a beautiful side profile, and she's really cute. I can see why he tried following her. I love the way they decide to film this movie with the different close up shots and the way the camera moves. It makes everything seem so intimate and personal. I love how you can hear the environmental sounds all throughout the different scenes in the movie. Like the cashier talking in the background at the book store and all the heavy car traffic in the streets, the loud talking and incoherent noises of the cafeteria at work. It makes everything feel just that much real, like you're there, a part of it. I did find that all the talking about religion and political, philosophical crap kind of dragged on. The French love to philosophize. The problem with this movie is that there's too much chitter chatter not enough story telling. If I want to listen to a bunch of people talk about philosophy and religion and love, I'll watch a podcast. This movies more of a character study than an interesting story and that's why I don't like it that much. I had to fast forward quite a bit. A somewhat interesting study on love relationships, and taking chances. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
