Not many people could have done what Rohmer has. It is a very delicate triumph for the talkies, and the ending of his picture hangs there like the close of a great short story. Go to Full Review

My Night at Maud's is about love, being a Roman Catholic, body language and the games people play. It is just about the best movie I've seen on all four subjects. Go to Full Review

As with all French New Wave films, this one still feels fresh and unique. Nearly fifty years after its release you still see it bucking trends and plowing new ground. Go to Full Review

How this is made into absorbing material that elicits the easy concentration of the audience is tribute to the fine acting of Jean-Louis Trintignant and Francoise Fabien, and the relaxed intelligent direction of Eric Rohmer. Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Jul 18 This is a real talkie. No violence, no sex, no car chases. A Renault 16 gets stuck on ice. A very important car by the way, even Brezhnev owned one. Essentially the movie is about men and women relating to each other. The male hero is supposedly being driven by his Catholic faith, which is a faint excuse for his behavior, as the church does not recognize premarital sex. He may know Pascal, but cannot really make up his mind about who to live with. Eventually he follows his theories and marries Francoise, but when he meets Maud again years later, we can see that he still thinks what if. One of the best Eric Rohmer’s films. If someone decides to watch it expecting a lot of action after dark, the PG rating should help to clarify things, although the issues raised are beyond the level of kids, despite the lack of nudity. Even if irritates you, one can never deny that its a work of art. See more Noel P 07/26/2023 Second film I watched on Eric Rohmer's filmography. What can I say? He's a masterful director and an actor's dream -- you can tell by how comfortable his actors are, and the dialogue is so natural. Visually, it also makes me respect the choice of black and white more and more, which worked perfectly for this film. See more david b 03/28/2023 I think this film reflects more on our moralistic and religious backgrounds vs our ability to become the people we imagine and fantasise we are. I instantly recognised episodes in my life from this and enjoyed the sentiment behind this. I was actually surprised that a film from the nouvelle vague canon had such a sophisticated and restrained underpinning. if you are an over-thinker this film was made for you. Take a holiday in its premise and spend time with its characters, it feels like time travel. See more 07/14/2022 Loved it - superb performances. Jean Louis Trintignant's performance is wonderful.
