Pippa Bailey New Statesman Must we view an octopus as a friend, a saviour, a teacher? Couldn't we simply settle for not eating them? May 12, 2021 Full Review Peter Travers ABC News You'll laugh and cry your eyes out as an emotionally bruised diver learns about life and loyalty from an eight-tentacled mollusk. This Oscar favorite and viral sensation is the year's most unorthodox and unforgettable love story. Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Is this octopus so extraordinary, such a miracle of the natural world, that we're going to believe this redemption tale? And the answer is: yes, it is. Rated: 4/5 Mar 29, 2021 Full Review M.N. Miller Film Focus Online After watching Pippa Ehrlich's film, you may find it manipulative, lacking real depth, until it slowly starts to grow on you. It has a bit of magic in it. Rated: 3/5 Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “My Octopus Teacher” is a beautiful, moving, and reflective experience. It’s also a little crazy and doesn’t do much to hide its aggressive tugs on your heartstrings. Rated: 4/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Dan Bayer Next Best Picture While this approach leaves the human element of the film's story often feeling like a bit of an afterthought, it still manages to garner an emotional response through the intimacy and purity of its story. Roddy Love this film, one of the best nature docs ever made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/21 Full Review Judith S Wonderful photography touching story of a man learning to a love because of an octopus. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/21 Full Review wdnt y I remember the night that I started watching this a year or so ago I was so enthralled that I couldn’t put it down. I had to watch the whole series and it was truly amazing. I knew a lot about the octopus going in mostly the fact that it could be alienthat it’s unlike anything else on this planet, and that there is no evolutionary barrier from this or to this it simply just an amazing creature and I’m really glad I watched this and got to know it more. Thank you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Jesenia D To this day, this nature documentary is one of few pieces of media that has made me truly sob. I felt embarrassed at first because I found myself thinking “this is just a documentary and no one else is crying!”. I kept asking myself, why am I crying so much? There are actually multiple reasons for this. Though her death was melancholy and felt barren, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty, brilliancy, and resilience of nature. This kept bringing me to tears. In addition, the innocence of this relationship with nature was very heartwarming to me. A connection to nature is important and will encourage humans to protect it. Nature is resilient, complex, and will adapt when put under stress but if we as humans were able to connect with it more like our ancestors, there would be more motivation and desire to protect it. Like her short life, it may seem insignificant yet is vital to her ecosystem just like we are. This movie clarified for me, our relationship with the natural world. We must respect the other parts of this life cycle and work alongside the other organisms that live on this planet with us. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Jackson D This movie is the most blasphemous portrayal of the life of an octopus I have seen in a long time. Craig foster actuvely treats the octopus like a metaphor for his own pain (which he straight up created out of nothing). To start off, Craig Foster tells us that he feels disconnected from his son, then proceeds to spend an entire year away from his son, visiting a damn octopus. The fact that, he mentioned he wants to get closer to his family but spends frickin 25 hours of the day away from his home is actually crazy. Furthermore, he says he's tired of making documentaries, but takes a break from documentaries, to make a documnetary! This guy seems hypocritical as hell! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review razvan p criticism first, i dont get the logistics of it, which kills the immersion the man is uninspiring and uninspired , it ticked me off he doesnt ask meaningful questions about his level of apathy regarding the animnal, at least he could explain why he took that stance but its completely ignored. the good is that its clearly an emotional ride that will sensitize the viewer as it did the actor. it raises theological questions hopefully and brings a lesson [as it did the actor] Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
