Critics Consensus

Although My Old Lady doesn't quite live up to its stars' talents, Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith carry the film capably whenever they're together onscreen.

David Sims The Atlantic I'd praise Horovitz for going the darker route if My Old Lady wasn't so wrenchingly obvious and Kevin Kline's character wasn't so venal and cruel. Sep 22, 2016 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) It's solidly predictable and somewhat grating, only partially redeemed by a reliably watchable cast. Rated: 2/5 Nov 23, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) As we learn more about the tormented family backgrounds, broken love affairs and suicide attempts of the protagonists, the film begins to sag under the weight of its characters' mounting self-pity. Rated: 2/5 Nov 21, 2014 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse What begins as a fish out of water story about real estate and desperation slowly becomes a character study. Rated: 3/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Maggie Smith serves up one of her finer performances as of late. Rated: 3.5/4.0 Sep 17, 2020 Full Review Stephen A. Russell The New Daily (Australia) With a fair few unpredictable twists and an avoidance, for the most part, of more overt romantic tropes, My Old Lady is a fascinating chamber piece, even if it is all a bit too rosy at the end after thoroughly raking up the dirt. Rolf G The premise of the Life Lease is OK but story does not hold together well. It tries to deal with the rawness and selfishness of infidelity and the damage it causes while trying to feel life affirming and include a happy ending. With such a great cast there are some watchable moments but they are not enough to save this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review bernd e Great actors in a good movie. The French attitudes are accurate, and the Marais is beautifully correct. Loved the plot development and the actors. The story is, unfortunately, too predictable. There is no suspense. We know that Kevin Kline and Kristin Scott-Thomas will get together, and that all will be fine. However, the atmosphere of Paris and the Marais are beautifully done. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review ra t Intriguing story-line. Secrets and lies finally exposed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review james w Consistently interesting and entertaining. Enjoyed all three stars, Smith, Klein and Thomas. Great to see Maggie Smith not playing Downton Abbey. It got tiresome or boring with too much back and forth, but it was a originally a play. It was smart and unpredictable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Best movie with the worst title. Kevin Kline was never better. Kristin Scott-Thomas and Maggie Smith were wonderful. Good story. Totally entertaining Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A tortuous watch and had to give up 20 minutes before the end. I liked the setting but its overly drawn out and I frankly could not warm to Kline or indeed anyone in this rather indulgent stab at If its set in Paris its got to be chic .Sorry its just miserable.
