Critics Consensus

Pretty to look at but dramatically inert, My Oxford Year may have the right pedigree as a romantic dramedy but flunks out on the fundamentals.

Robert Levin Newsday There's no reason to bother with "My Oxford Year" unless you're a YA romance completist. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 15, 2025 Full Review Courtney Howard Variety What should be a tender, feminist-minded story centered on a young woman rediscovering her dormant childhood dreamer turns into a middling melodrama about being with a cute guy in desperate need of her rescue. Aug 1, 2025 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal They are all very attractive people, as are Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack as Jamie’s parents. They just aren’t given a lot to do. Aug 1, 2025 Full Review Rohan Naahar The Indian Express My Oxford Year transforms after an hour into a different beast altogether; not necessarily one that you’d signed up for. Sep 1, 2025 Full Review Sofía Aguilar LatinaMedia.Co Not only is this just sappy, bad writing... but it also sends the message that it’d be better for a disabled person to die than to live out the rest of their lives with a disability. Aug 31, 2025 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator My Oxford Year may be a work of accidental genius, but it’s a work of genius nonetheless. You will squirm, you will laugh derisively, you will cringe. By the end, though, you will be forced to admit that you secretly enjoyed every moment. Aug 15, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Nicky A It was a great and emotional story. However, Sofia Carson is a bad actress and I just couldn't get past that. She made it cringe and unwatchable, even though I did adore Corey's performance. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review Laura C. Boring. That’s literally the only thing to say about this film. Is so plain and unflavored that is simply wonderfully boring Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/10/25 Full Review Brian B I note that many reviewers have dismissed this film as contrived, formulaic and lacking a believable story line. What they have seem to have forgotten is that this is a rom com tinged with tragedy - why would you expect it to be believable. That is not the point! I thought the film was well written and the script smart with some good messages for those of us willing to listen. All I can assume is that a lot of reviewers are so jaded and world weary that they cannot enjoy a good romantic story when it is put in front of them which is a shame. The locations definitely helped and the Oxford backgrounds provided a romantic backdrop against which the story unfolds. For me this was a good, entertaining watch with a good cast and engaging leads. What's not to like? Quite a lot if you are a film critic with no sense of romance or place or time. For the rest of us I can recommend this delightful film which I thoroughly enjoyed. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Charlie Joe L its a sad story. but the strory line is nice. it reminds us to follow our passion and live and the enjoy the mess and the fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/25 Full Review J V The movie could've been more realistic about the reality of cancer and it's effects on your body. Other than that one detail, I really enjoyed the film with a sad ending. I've watched it repeatedly & the movie has a great soundtrack. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Dany J So emotional, didn't expect this... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
