Critics Consensus

My Spy plugs Dave Bautista into the "charismatic action star meets cute kid" formula, with generally painless albeit decidedly mediocre results.

Angie Han FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Both a little bit better than I expected and not quite good... Self-awareness doesn't make up for the fact that it's very predictable. Jul 9, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine The movie's humor is broad and its twists are obvious, so much so that even a couple of enjoyable performances can't really elevate My Spy into anything unique. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 1, 2020 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times The holes in this forgettable, borderline creepy film are as big as the canyon in Naperville. Rated: 2/4 Jun 30, 2020 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a familiar yet thoroughly watchable comedy... Rated: 3/4 Apr 27, 2024 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews The reason I'm not giving this one a positive grade is due to the lack of closure given to a significant issue regarding Chloe Coleman's character arc, which sends the wrong message to everyone (kids and parents) going through the same problem. Rated: C+ Jul 24, 2023 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut My Spy rides the coattails of its likable lead for sketch-like comedy that lacks any proper depth or complexity, but that’s certainly what may be needed right now. Kyle M Chloe Coleman’s snarky debut differentiates the familiar trope through behavioral indecision, amusingly clashing Dave Bautista’s ethical stature and hyping Kristen Schaal’s humorous antics, all making up their excusably separate purity from the flawed tactical backdrop with ridicule in both mixtures. As a result, the hilarity is genuine and worthwhile, typically persuade in appeal for continuation. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review alan g Another Barrista flop. Hard pass. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review Les N Surprisingly good, with some witty remarks....corny with obvious faults. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Robin W Excellent entertainment! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Jim D I thought Chloe Cole was absolutely adorable and a great actress. VERY endearing. I think my favorite scene was where Bautista tries to teach her about lying and physical cues. Her lines and the delivery was perfect. A very enjoyable watch for me and my daughter. I am shocked at the poor reviews. YOU SHOULD SEE IY. FF Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review J G Really nice movie. It's silly, not realistic, etc - but it's exactly what it promises to be. A buddy movie with Bautista and a 9 year old girl (Coleman) - who pretty much steals the show. That kind of cast chemistry is what makes films like this enjoyable. Weirdly, Kristen Schaal is given almost nothing to work with - playing a mostly unlikable character and doesn't even get the comedic lines that Ken Jeong gets. Even her 'redemption' arc is mostly accidental and unnecessary. Felt like her character was poorly planned and shoe-horned in to a movie. In a TV show there would've been more time to develop, but just didn't really work. This isn't brilliant cinema, and yes - it could've been more. But it's an enjoyable movie nonetheless.
