      Critics Consensus

My Spy plugs Dave Bautista into the "charismatic action star meets cute kid" formula, with generally painless albeit decidedly mediocre results.

Susan G I loved this movie. I have watched this film at least six times. My family enjoys this film and my young son has it in his film rotation. The main characters are wonderfully relatable, quirky and well-meaning, (except the bad guys, of course). There was an enjoyable mix of jokes for kids and adults. The wonderfully acted, charming and truthful relationship between the CIA agent and the little girl was genuine and the rest of the characters support them beautifully. A great production in all ways. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review SkyRo P This movie seemed to promise more than what the trailer delivered, prompting you to give it a chance by watching the full film. The movie leans heavily on a mix of comedy, action, and hero elements, which can work well with the right cast in place. However, in this case, Dave Bautista's performance feels a bit off. While he excels in comedic roles, like Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, his transition to a more serious action role doesn't quite hit the mark. Bautista seems to have pigeonholed himself into the comedic superhero persona, making it challenging for audiences to see him in a different light. Unlike John Cena, who successfully balances humor and action, Bautista's attempt at comedy falls flat outside of his established character. The movie overall comes across as overly cheesy and corny, lacking the depth needed to be taken seriously. While it may be worth watching once for the experience, it's not a film that merits repeated viewings. It's best to approach it with tempered expectations or consider skipping it altogether. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Robert B I'm a fan of fun semi silly movies. Bautista and the girl battle of wits was funny and heart warming at the same time. Bautista has a pretty good handle on action movies, but this showed that he can be a pretty funny straight man/foil for a more comedic movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review Giorgio G Being obviously a kiddie movie it is still somewhat enjoyable for adults with a wide sense of humor. Pretty silly all in all, but surely entertaining. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Keith N I mean, it wasn't the worst film I've seen. It was just meh, nothing really special about it & I definitely enjoyed Batista's performance Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review YTKristiansTY I think the movie was awesome, the thought that a kid can manipulate a grow up's feelings can be surprising, and the film showed that it could be amaizing. The film was fun for me, I had some times i couldn't stop laughing. If you are thinking of watching this movie, I strongly recommend to watch it, because I think you will have a great time while watching it. Angie Han FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Both a little bit better than I expected and not quite good... Self-awareness doesn't make up for the fact that it's very predictable. Jul 9, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine The movie's humor is broad and its twists are obvious, so much so that even a couple of enjoyable performances can't really elevate My Spy into anything unique. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 1, 2020 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times The holes in this forgettable, borderline creepy film are as big as the canyon in Naperville. Rated: 2/4 Jun 30, 2020 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews The reason I'm not giving this one a positive grade is due to the lack of closure given to a significant issue regarding Chloe Coleman's character arc, which sends the wrong message to everyone (kids and parents) going through the same problem. Rated: C+ Jul 24, 2023 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut My Spy rides the coattails of its likable lead for sketch-like comedy that lacks any proper depth or complexity, but that’s certainly what may be needed right now. Rated: 3/5 Aug 28, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s tempting to dismiss my own opinion by simply accepting that I’m not the target audience. Then again I’m not quite sure who the target audience is. The dead bodies and the smattering of crude dialogue are enough to muddle the lines. Rated: 2/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
