Jordan Mintzer The Hollywood Reporter Kang Je-kyu's big-budgeted WWII melodrama offers up a kitschy, overtly violent tale about two rival marathon runners caught in a continent-hopping battle of blood, guts and bad dialogue. Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times [Director Kang Je-kyu] engineers one long pummel session of elaborate CGI effects, shaky battle cinematography and trial-by-fire heroics, but the nonstop adversity lacks any real sense of danger. Or, for that matter, emotional punch. Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Chris Vognar Dallas Morning News This is big-boned, epic filmmaking of a variety Cecil B. DeMille or D.W. Griffith would appreciate. Rated: B+ Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Chris Knight National Post The film runs for almost two and a half hours and features some brutal scenes of combat, but the acting is fine and the locations, scouted for two years and shot over almost six months, are stunning. Rated: 3/4 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Emma Bernstein The Playlist In a movie that is so visually right -- from costumes to sets to effects -- it is highly disappointing to see the script go so wrong. Rated: C+ Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Matt Prigge Philadelphia Weekly The twisty narrative resembles a trashy, brain-drained version of the Japanese mega-epic The Human Condition -- at a fifth the length -- that's been crossed with The Fox and the Hound. Liam D Epic in scale little in characters. It’s definitely overlong but the action is impressive Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Nawt W For all its high budget, that was enough to contract Andrea Bocelli for a theme song and admittedly gruesome war scenes. The production designers just settled on watching Enemy at the Gates and Save Private Ryan, decided that was the gold standard, and copied them, sometimes one-to-one in some scenes. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/23 Full Review Kevin S I can't understand how rotten tomatoes only gives this 22 percent & fans only gave it 77 percent. This is 1 of the best movies i've ever seen, let alone war movie.... CINEMAFILE7081(youtube) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Avery V Idk why the rotten tomatoes are low but I thought it was perfect. Literally perfect. Honestly one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life. Whoever gave the rotten tomatoes this low should watch and understand the movie. Don't be there for the war but for the understanding of each character. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review Steve C My; my; how the tables turn frequently. A lesson in treating others well when you have the power. You never know when the tables could turn. Other than that, the plot armour is thick in those two. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I would not recommend this movie. Imperial Japanese Army was pure evil. remember Nanking!
