Richard Brody The New Yorker 01/04/2018
The film plays like the work of a bitterly angry man, and, indeed, the set was a battleground for cast and crew... Co-produced by François Truffaut, to whose “400 Blows” Pialat’s film is perhaps the only worthy successor. Go to Full Review

[Maurice] Pialat is doing something that movies rarely do any more: tell a simple, touching story warmly, straight. Go to Full Review

Maurice Pialat's first feature film is an unmistakable and strong link to the elliptical, almost-vrit tradition of contemporary filmmaking Go to Full Review

It conceives of characters not in the terms of the typical cinematic narrative, but rather as spontaneous beings, seemingly unpredictable even to themselves. Go to Full Review

02/27/2015 Maurice Pialat made a timeless film about a young man in revolt against the world. Recently transferred from a foster home, Francois, is trying to get accustomed to his new home and seem to destroy every chances he gets at happiness. The Thierry's his new 'parents' are an old adorable and patient couple who try their best to help him and nurture him but Francois is not an easy child and his feeling of abandon makes destroys him from the inside. It's a raw film but a beautiful piece of cinema that remain a classic for any film aficionado. See more 06/04/2013 very strong and heartbreaking film. an almost documentary look at a foster child and his troubles See more 02/12/2013 A switch in perspective at the end hampers an otherwise beautiful film. See more 06/20/2012 Observant, sweet film about the experiences of a foster child and his struggles to form connections while acting out. See more 04/02/2012 I am rather ashamed to admit that this is only the second film of Maurice Pialat's which I have seen. I liked À nos amours, but it never really affected me on an emotional level like I was hoping for. Naked Childhood is a piercing view into the life of a troubled youth, Francois. It's a slow moving film in which the story unfolds very naturally as we follow Francois from one foster home to another. The thing that clearly stands out about this film is how it deals with telling a story of a troubled child. There are no cheap thrills whatsoever, rather it just presents the facts of the story as if the camera is just an observer watching Francois every moment. The film never paints the child as anything he is not and is not exploitative in the slightest. A perfect example of this being the relationship which Francois forms with the grandmother; I found these sequences to be incredibly resonant and important to the film, yet they don't take up much of the screen time in the slightest. There are scenes in which Pialat portrays a quiet loneliness in Francious, and I just found this whole thing to be a fair, honest look at troubled youth. See more Read all reviews
