Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Haphazardly assembled in tone, with no clear reason to include lengthy clips from Mike Nichols' "Catch-22" or Liliana Cavani's "The Skin" (among others) aside from their story-positioned relevance to the city at the time. Dec 7, 2017 Full Review John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter The doc delivers enough arresting Neapolitan moments that many viewers will consider tracking down the source material - still in print, nearly four decades after Lewis published it in 1978. Dec 7, 2017 Full Review Luke Y. Thompson Village Voice In the end, the most important point made is that postwar occupation is hard, hard work...one you hope today's stateside politicians will someday take on board. Dec 2, 2017 Full Review James Walton The Spectator At first, this mosaic technique was a little distracting. Sep 5, 2018 Full Review Kent Turner Film-Forward.com The time-traveling visuals are gracefully propelled by Benedict Cumberbatch's narration of Lewis's eloquent and precise prose, with its sotto voce observations intact. Rated: 3/5 Dec 6, 2017 Full Review Lisa Jo Sagolla Film Journal International This is a film that must be seen more than once. Nov 28, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

paul d Francesco Patierno's Naples '44 is an ode to an outstanding, deeply humane book. I've read the book twice, and loved it. I applaud the movie's ambitious structure, the assembly of a mosaic of vignettes to tell its story rather than doing it as a straightforward narrative. I also like its dreamy quality and the interspersing of contemporary shots, archive documentary footage and clips from many fictional films. Despite my admiration, I can't imagine how a viewer who has not read the book could make much sense of it.
