Mr. Phoenix's Napoleon could never have commanded so much as a squadron of the Salvation Army, and though the movie is sprinkled with a few reasonably hearty battle scenes, overall it's something like Mr. Scott's Waterloo.

Much of Napoleon felt like a parody of what an epic historical film would want to be with messy writing and a confusing tone that failed to engage me in the history of the characters portrayed on the screen

The screenplay in particular, an original written by Scarpa, doesn’t sew a thread strong enough to hold all the big-bang action pieces together. This leaves an enjoyable epic that could have been so much more.

On a technical level, Napoleon is great, from the costumes to the sets. That is the extent of the positives I can give to the movie. The rest of the movie is a truly hollow and empty experience with no actual story to follow.
