01/07/2014 Oddly compelling film written and directed by Marguerite Duras. This experimental film is more about unidentified domestic strife, violent child behavior and domestic ritual. A sense of doom and pending horror looms as the viewer watches these talented actors navigate thru oddly comic moments to uncomfortable intense ones. This is a simple and existential view of domestic ritual with pervasive sense of dread always present in the corners or behind the actions/dialog of the actors. It is next to impossible to place Duras' film into a genre. It is equally impossible to dismiss this film. It is quite easily one of the most haunting films I've ever seen which actually seems to be "about" very little or possibly "about" a whole lot that is either unstated or hidden behind the mundane rituals of the two women.
