Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Nationale 7 is a pretty awesome little film by Jean-Pierre Sinapi, where the inhabitants of a disabled's home want to get laid. Don't we all? The City of Lost Children doesn't completely succeed in capitalizing all the potential there would be in it's wonderful science fiction fairytale world, but it's an interesting movie nonetheless. The style of Scorsese's Gangs of New York is a bit too mainstream Hollywood spectacle -type for it's own good, but the film's Mad Max romanticism and anarchic chaos in a boiling city of slums, where action and mayhem is the prefered way, is endearing. The characters don't touch very deep, but then again the action is so large and well packed that they don't need to. Eleven times out of ten this type of films drown in their own sleazy clichedness and horrible dialogue, but I guess Gangs of New York is the exception that proves the rule. The Others combines very traditionally elegant horror elements with some more modern story innovations, resulting in a stylistically flawless haunted house flick with utterly fabulous pacing of suspense. The plot is progressive and doesn't fall into unnecessary repetition. Great job from director Alejandro Amenábar. And I think the two kid actors are great.
