Raised in an impoverished part of Naples, Italy, Massimo Pagano (Antonio Orlando) and his sister, Vittoria (Christina Donadio), choose two different paths to try to advance their lives. Determined to better herself by conventional routes, Vittoria studies diligently, learning English and getting work as a flight attendant while having a number of tumultuous affairs. Meanwhile, Massimo becomes an ardent member of the Communist Party, only to find himself stranded in a low-paying job.
