J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com Nebraska is a slow-burning heart-warmer that neatly dodges the cornball bullet of a climactic manly hug. Rated: B Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Forever typecast as nutjobs and con artists, Dern's Woody Grant is a little chubby, a little bewildered, and a lot unkempt. He's grizzled, resigned, and wonderful, and so is the film. The black and white aesthetic is also appropriate here. Kevin P A very funny and bittersweet road trip movie about a senile old man bonding with his sons and wife while trying to chase one last dream. The film is wonderfully directed by Alexander Payne (director of Sideways & The Holdovers). The acting is terrific, with Bruce Dern, June Squibb, Will Forte, and Bob Odenkirk all giving such warm, funny, and genuine performances. The performances all feel so real and authentic, especially with all the old folks. The film coloring is in crisp black and white filming, which adds to the empty feeling of growing old and nostalgic in the isolating vast empty fields of the rural American Midwest. It’s a rather tender story about letting someone believe one last dream in their final days of old age. I love the soundtrack. It's very easygoing with its relaxing soft instrumental folk music. The movie carefully handles drama and comedy. I loved all the sassy old married couple banter between Woody and Kate, who share great chemistry with each other and their sons as they all clearly love each other, but they’re super blunt when trying to keep each other in check. They're all tired of the elderly Woody's senile antics, but they're also the first to stand up for him whenever someone tries to put him down. Several scenes were downright hilarious, including their disappointing visit to Mt Rushmore ("It doesn't even look finished"), the air compressor "rescue", and especially the graveyard scene. The mother Kate is hilarious and a downright savage when she bluntly goes off on all of her old hometown colleagues with no sugar coating it. "See what you could've had Keith, if you hadn't talked about weed all the time". But she works for drama too, as she leads such a satisfying scene when she calls out the leeching family members trying to intimidate some money out of Woody at the end of the family party. It feels so relatable to anyone who has ever had an unresolved extended family tension that never got resolved. I'm glad they eventually made it to Lincoln, Nebraska. I appreciate that they shot the movie on-location across Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska (I actually recognized several of the shops and landmarks in the brief scenes shot in Lincoln). Woody didn't win the lottery, but he got the truck and even got to drive it to show off his old fair-weather hometown friends in a really sweet and heartwarming ending that wraps up the film perfectly. It's a really touching father-and-son bonding story, where the further you watch, the more the movie peels back the layers as you learn more about the family and grow to appreciate them. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/25 Full Review Juli M This movie is a gem. It gave me plenty of laughs, a lump in my throat, and filled up my heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Don T Bruce Dern and the woman who played his wife were fantastic. Good cinematography and sound. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/03/25 Full Review Joshua m It's good to watch a "real" movie rather than the formulaic Hollywood fare. I like the B&W photography. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review Sams K Great movie. The message behind this movie is very deep, everything fits so well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review S R I appreciated it for what it was, but in the end it was still frustrating and I don't plan to see it again. I did like how it showed how people can change and lie about who they are so easily. It did have some good moments of the news anchor fighting and the memory lanes / characters they encountered. It was also sad showing the plight of the working class in NE and SD. Saw on Pluto. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
