as gangster movies go it's pretty standard fare: one organization tries to muscle in on another groups turf and the killing begins. but i didn't care for the editing nor the camerawork - they don't suit the mood of the film; it's set in 1969 but the editing and camerawork are clearly modern, which just clashed badly for me. i'd say director and writer david caesar was heavily influenced by guy rictche's "lock,stock..." and "snatch" and steven soderbergh's "ocean's 11", and is therefore a bit derivative and lacking originality. however i did like the casting of bryan brown and john goodman but the rest... not so much.
not a great movie but a bit of fun.

Solid and interesting Australian gangster film let down slighty buy the final third of its running time.
Barry Ryan is the top gangster in the fruit machine racket ,his sledgehammer now ask questions later brand of enforcement has made him a wealthy man with a massive house a trophy wife and mistresss.
Suddeny 3 things come into Barrys world ,the First is the returning soldier Darcy who falls in with Barry and in love with his mistress.
The second is a war over machines with a rival gangster which threatens to spiral out of control much to the concern of local corrupt cop Murphy played by Sam Neil.
Finally the mafia have arrived in the shape of Tony , played by John Goodman and his touchy side kick Sal.
Director David Caesar manages to keep the story afloat and its not until the film goes into the outback that some of the memento is lost.
Bryan Brown is part scary part comeidian in the role of Barry and Sam Neil ,Toni Collete And John Good man all get to show what good actors they are .
The culture clash between the Americans and Ozzies is well handled and their is plenty of violence for those who enjoy that part of gangster movies.
A different type of crime flick ,its just a shame it runs out of steam towards the end

Though perhaps a bit too overstuffed for such familiar fare, Dirty Deeds succeeds through sheer force of quirk and a seemingly endless supply of hyper-kinetic energy.
