For any men who think they understand what women go through when it comes to being targeted, harassed, and attacked both online and off. Here is the briefest look at why we don't.

"Netizens" is a powerful, sometimes shocking presentation of the life-altering fall-out from on-line harassment. It also is a testament to the courage and resilience of the women who told their stories and have moved forward with their lives. It addresses on-line safety issues that are relevant to us all. You must see this film!

The World Wide Web is a blessing. But it can also be a curse, defaming and damaging women's and men's lives. In the wrong hands, the internet can be used as a weapon of destruction.
NETIZENS is an extremely well-crafted documentary exploring the abuses individuals perpetrate using the internet- creating of false websites, non-consensual sharing of images aka "revenge porn", issuing obscene and life-threatening threats and more. Cynthia Lowen's critically important, eye-and-heart-opening documentary shines a light on these abuses, following the lives of three women at once victimized and standing up to assaults waged against them. NETIZENS illumines a crucial, but often tragically ignored, understated and/or misrepresented dimension of gender-based violence, while also highlighting the lack of response from social media platforms, schools (who suspend or expel the victims), police, and legislators to what is being perpetrated.
We are living in a momentous time as more and more women and men are stepping forth, despite risking shaming and retaliation, to tell their stories and listen to and support others, that we all might heal and create a more loving, just and inclusive world, step-by-step, story by story, court case by court case, and hopefully new law by law.
In a discussion with Director Cynthia Lowen, following today's screening of the documentary, I was moved to hear that the film has been shown abroad to high school students. Kudos to those schools welcoming NETIZENS into their school communities who recognize the value of educating and empowering young women and young men, regarding the destructive impact of such abuse and choosing not to remain silent.
NETIZENS is a vital piece of the big picture to which the "Me, Too" movement is calling long overdue attention; it is a documentary that deserves a wide acclaim and a wide audience in many nations that includes our youth. A deep bow to Director Cynthia Lowen and her creative team as well as to the women featured in this extraordinary documentary. And to all those of any age and gender who have been victims of damaging internet bullying, slander, shaming, isolation and other abuses, may you each and all be strengthened and know that you are not alone. May the internet, its social media platforms and our governing institutions become sources of blessings, not curses, of truth not lies; may they serve transformation, making whole what has been divided and broken. NETIZENS is more than a step in that direction!
