Blu B A Hidden Gem Western Classic. Acting is solid with really the only issue is McQueen at the start acting like a little boy which feels so out of place and a bit weird because he's clearly not. But besides that once he gets out of that whiny phase he does his typical thing and is great in this. The villians are good to to boot. Keith is really good and the best thing. I wish he was in this more with McQueen. Everything else is suprisngly really well done with solid direction. This starts out as a revenge movie, than a Western, than becomes a Prison movie, than melodrama back to a western. It's honestly quite the heroes journey we get to see Max go on. I will say in the middle it becomes a swamp prison movie for a long time and it's well done but it feels completely like a different flick when it does it. Setting, tone, and everything just feels so different. It's a very unique type of Western and really belongs more as an adventure than anything. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, Westerns, or adventures should give this a try. It's not what you'd expect even if your expecting something good. Very suprised by this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review delysid d havent seen the carpetbaggers but i loved this one Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/20 Full Review Audience Member Solid, interesting, and unusual Western. The biggest problem is the casting. McQueen hands in an excellent performance, but he is supposed to be much younger than he is, and it doesn't quite work. Acting, directing, soundtrack, etc., are all top flight. If you like Westerns you'll probably enjoy this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Good, but nothing great. Uses Joe Campbell's Hero's Journey for its simple plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm a huge McQueen fan, but have always found this movie to be flat and slow moving despite a good cast. McQueen is supposed to be a young man but clearly is not. Half Indian, but doesn't seem to have a drop of Native American blood. The best thing about the movie? The fantastic theme music by Alfred Newman. World class. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review andy f If you can get over the fact that 35 year old McQueen is supposed to be a young man (circa 21 I guess) who is also half Indian (McQueen is fair skinned and blond/fair haired), this isn't a bad Western adventure at all. The cast are fantastic and the plot although predictable is engaging. I guess this is McQueen's Cool Hand Luke moment. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
