The best thing that can be said about Nevada Smith is that it goes in, does what it needs to do, and gets out before it's too late. Go to Full Review

Nick F Jan 2 Steve McQueen was 36 when he played a mixed-race character half that age in Nevada Smith, a fine 1966 Western with an unconventional storyline. McQueen manages to look and behave like a much younger man who sets out to avenge the murder of his parents. There were three gunmen responsible for the murders and it takes McQueen several years to catch up with them one by one, having various adventures and mishaps along the way. Produced and directed by Henry Hathaway, this movie has a strong cast including Brian Keith, Pat Hingle, Raf Vallone, Arthur Kennedy and most notably Karl Malden, leader of the trio which murdered McQueen’s parents. McQueen’s eventual retribution is compellingly unfolded though it must be said that at 2 hours 10 minutes, some harder editing in the rather slow mid-section would have given the film an even sharper impact. REVIEWED by Nick Fletcher. See more Cal W Sep 2 Great movie with a strong cast. 🤠 See more Blu B Jun 21 A Hidden Gem Western Classic. Acting is solid with really the only issue is McQueen at the start acting like a little boy which feels so out of place and a bit weird because he's clearly not. But besides that once he gets out of that whiny phase he does his typical thing and is great in this. The villians are good to to boot. Keith is really good and the best thing. I wish he was in this more with McQueen. Everything else is suprisngly really well done with solid direction. This starts out as a revenge movie, than a Western, than becomes a Prison movie, than melodrama back to a western. It's honestly quite the heroes journey we get to see Max go on. I will say in the middle it becomes a swamp prison movie for a long time and it's well done but it feels completely like a different flick when it does it. Setting, tone, and everything just feels so different. It's a very unique type of Western and really belongs more as an adventure than anything. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, Westerns, or adventures should give this a try. It's not what you'd expect even if your expecting something good. Very suprised by this. McQueen hands in an excellent performance, but he is supposed to be much younger than he is, and it doesn't quite work. Acting, directing, soundtrack, etc., are all top flight. If you like Westerns you'll probably enjoy this. See more 07/30/2016 Good, but nothing great. Uses Joe Campbell's Hero's Journey for its simple plot. See more Read all reviews
