Audience Member In Nezulla The Rat Monster, secret government experiments go wrong (thanks to evil Americans, which are nowhere in sight) as they produce a half-human, half-rat, person-sized kaiju monster that roams an abandoned warehouse. In order to cover-up the mess, Japanese-American soldiers (who's attempts at being American are ATROCIOUSLY hilarious), one Japanese soldier, and a female scientist trap themselves inside with the rat monster in hopes of destroying it or blowing themselves up with a bomb. The rat, as ridiculous as it looks, embodies the kaiju culture and mannerisms, though uniquely goes the horror route by killing the team one-by-one in vicious ways (even though the kills are offscreen unfortunately). To make matters worse, there are lots of unnecessary scenes that go on way longer than they should and somehow, 90 minutes seems to go on forever. There's also a side story involving a medical facility trying to find the cure before the diseased die off, particularly the nurse. That entire batch of vignettes led me to believe that they were in the past and perhaps the baby (also included in the side-story) would eventually become Nezulla. Nope, just a side story that was completely unnecessary and took away from the rest of the film for the most part. Overall, sadly disappointing and uncool despite being marketed as something special. It's no wonder writer/director Kanta Tagawa hasn't done anything else after this bomb.
