In his debut Anna Magdalena he directs with apparent ease and does some unexpected things with Ivy Ho's written material. The transition from the stark realism of the movie's first part to the over the top-fantasy world of it's latter is by no means seamless, but Yee pulls his well-dispositioned story within a story-scheme off quite effectively. Acting is also very fine, Aaron Kwok always seem to impress when acting somewhat out of character. Anna Magdalena is a seldom seen gem that deserves an wider audience.
