Andrew Chan Film Comment Magazine Daughter of the Nile represents something special: the kind of modestly crafted masterpiece a director makes just before he comes into recognition of his own stature. Nov 3, 2017 Full Review Michael Atkinson Village Voice It's a quintessential modern family tragedy we walk into like uninvited and invisible guests. Oct 26, 2017 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com A fascinating blend of genre and familial dysfunction melodrama, weaving together the escapist fantasy of the manga (from which the film derives its name) and the plight of some resilient siblings. Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2020 Full Review Lee Jutton Film Inquiry The film, a gorgeous exploration of life on the margins of Taipei society, doesn't have much in the way of a propulsive plot, but it makes up for that with rich atmosphere and characters that feel so real, you'll swear you just saw them walk by. Apr 17, 2018 Full Review Graham Fuller Culture Trip [Hou Hsia-hsein's] observation of the fading, if garish, Taipei of the 1980s through the eyes of an as-yet-unformed young woman who has suffered tragedy and expects to suffer more endows the film with special poignancy. Nov 1, 2017 Full Review Andy Crump The Playlist Its inscrutability is essential to its power as narrative and its beauty as cinema. Rated: A- Oct 26, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Sameir A A very slow, offbeat, realistic and beautiful movie. Not for everyone, this is for those who enjoy out of the box dramas. Really loved it. The film deals basically the struggles of a small family. If you get into the characters, this film will give you an unforgettable experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/21 Full Review Audience Member My Favourite of Hous Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Hou's first urban film is also one of his most accessible. Filled with 80's pop songs and neon lights, the film follows the life of one of many of Hou's strong female protagonists and her gangster brother. One thing that intrigued me as in other Hou films like in A City of Sadness was how casually violence appears when you don't expect it. I think it's due to the general causal slice of life approach of his films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
