David Fear Time Out The kind of pedigreed pulp that gets left off greatest-genre-hits lists yet still inspires motormouthed overpraising from directorial enthusiasts. Insomniac X Surprisingly brutal 50's thriller which struggles to generate tension despite its apparent menace. Coen brothers neo-noir classic Fargo seems to draw inspiration from Nightfall's frozen landscapes, bag of loot lost to a blizzard, and oddly matched pair of murderers, one of whom gets shredded by a snowplow in a manner reminiscent of the notorious wood-chipper scene. Middling movie which secures cult status thanks to a handful of memorable moments. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Ken R Nightfall – Suspense Drama with Noir Flair. Who would have expected a film that runs for under 80mins to have such ‘A grade’ credentials? Nightfall is such a movie. With credits starting with Ted Richmond and Tyrone Power’s Production Company, it then boasts Jacques Tourneur as director (Out of the Past ’49). Then comes the top flight cast; Aldo Ray, Brian Keith, and a lovely, youthful Anne Bancroft, supported by well known character players. Now add cinematography by the great Burnett Guffey (All the Kings Men ’49 etc, etc), a screenplay by Stirling Silliphant (Charlie ’69) based on David Goodi’s robust novel. It has the earmarks of a film intended as a main feature that, for some reason, ended up being a support for a double-feature bill - it also keeps the viewer engaged with a series of compelling, tense situations. While there are a couple of strange plot gaps, it flows at such a pace these can be somewhat overlooked. Lovers of fifties noir dramas won’t be too disappointed with this quite rare offering, and Ray does well as the everyman thrown in at the deep end, hiding out for his life. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review nick s A fairly good film. Some aspects could have been better... the characters made illogical decisions, the hero kept beating off armed assailants with bare hands, and the plot lacked juicy surprises. Also the lead actor was a little patchy. But still worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Black and White but does not waste your time ever. Immediate suspense that never lets up. A very eloquent film, simple but beautiful. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Screenwriter Stirling Silliphant offers up a string of implausibilities in this tightly scripted noir. Silliphant does provide master filmmaker Jacques Tourneur cool locations like an oil pump field and outdoor fashion show that give the movie a Hitchcockian-feel. Aldo Ray plays the lead and it's great to see film lovers take a new accounting of his work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Jacques Torneur maestro del blanco y negro.
