Nil Battey Sannata has a light touch, yet is serious as hell. Despite the frenzied pace of Chanda's days, the film itself has an air of composure. Go to Full Review

Faiz D May 13 A wonderful feel-good film. See more 06/20/2020 A wonderful feel-good film. See more 04/28/2020 This movie is a must-watch. It portrays how a hard working daily wage earner mother, inspite of all problems, be it of financial or of any other kind, motivates her daughter to go to school and pass her exams, who herself is unwillingly to do so. The Mother had a dream, that her daughter would be well educated and established and lead a respectful life. She makes her dream come true. Swara Bhaskar, Riya Shukla, Ratna Pathak and Pankaj Tripathi; hats off to their acting. Definitely it's worth watching!!! See more 04/25/2020 Swara Bhaskar plays a mother who works as a domestic help in Mumbai. Her only hope is that her daughter will study and make 'something of herself'. The kid has other ideas, a lot of them. So Swara decides to join her daughter's class as an adult student without disclosing that she is her daughter's mother and proceeds to do well. Enough to steal her kid's friends and do well in class. The movie is a little improbable but still an easy watch. See more 04/10/2020 Ashwini Iyer Tiwari's directorial debut marks another one of the finest women filmmakers of the industry. You might argue that this sweet small town film isn't as enticingly feminist and confidently crafted, or made as Gauri Shinde's inherently beautiful "English Vinglish", but it's ultimately pleasurable, pleasing and leaves you with a smile on your face. It's not a perfect film though: the narrative stretches too much on a roll, there is less intimacy and intensity to the relationship between Ratna Pathak and Swara's relationship as the mistress and her daughter-like maid. The world around them is brutally deconstructed but it's too good to be true. Also, the character of Sanjay Suri wasn't fully realized as the other man here: Pankaj Tripathi's Mathematics teacher is way more cool and originally humorous. Infact, I feel that setting apart the terrific Swara Bhasker and her brilliantly acted daughter, there's little that's tonally moving. It's mostly only a social comed that relies on it's technical plusses, because it's narratively flawed and wildly predictable. But it's got a heart and in the right place, and even when it's got all the organs all over the place, it's elevated mostly by the skilled performances of it's competent actors and the message at it's core deserved as good a film as this. These qualities make "Neel Battey Sannata" a winsome affair and one of the better films of 2016. See more 10/02/2019 One of the finest of Indian cinema sadly did not meet the huge commercial success due to the absence of crowd pulling commercial actors. A must watch that sends the message education is the prime saviour by showing how a housemaid's determination and perseverance ultimately let her daughter attain the outstanding achiement of clearing the toughest civil services exam. Every child deserves the best and education is the only long term route. Watch and enjoy this masterpiece. See more Read all reviews
